Hello, I'm descended from Mary Hickey, who I am told is from a family long associated with Caherconlish.  I have been to the town and long to find family ties in the parish, if possible.  Mary Hickey married Richard Conroy, my 3rd great grandfather, who was not native to the area.  I am aware of only two children born to the couple, John (born before baptismal records were kept) and Catherine Conroy, baptized Catholic in January 1845.  The sponsors for the baptism were Patrick Connell and Ellen Connory.  The first records I have of my 2nd greatgrandather, John Conroy, finds him married to another Irish immigrant in the Gold Rush area of California.  His sister Catherine, as far as I know, remained in Ireland.  I would much appreciate learning what I can about Catherine, and anything about the Hickey family on Mary's line.  Jacqui

  • Dear Jacqui:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out project and many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

I have done a quick search for a possible marriage record for Catherine Conroy in County Limerick, but nothing has turned up.

In addition, I have copied your query to a volunteer who may be able to assist you.

If you have any further questions or other information, please be sure to post it here.

All the best to you with your research!

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Thank you so much, Jane!  I know that Richard Conroy is not listed in the 1826 Tithe records in Caherconlish.  By 1853, Mary and John Conroy lived at #26 on Main, and by 1858, Mary lived at #26 and #27, but Richard is no longer recorded as a tenant.   Mary is no longer a tenant there in 1861.  I do not have death records for Catherine, Richard, or Mary.  I so appreciate any help that you might be able to give!  Jacqui

  • Hello Jacqui

i suggest you search the graveyard  inscriptions for Caherconlish and Inch Saint Laurence cemeterys which are available free of charge on the website historicgraves.com.i had a quick look and saw some hickeys there .I have relations named Hickey in that area but notaware of lder generations.Hickey would appear to be a common name in that part of county Limerick. The diocesan Genealogy office for the Diocese of Limerick would also be worth contacting as Im sure they would do a commissioned search once they have a definite name and event.

    good hunting

  • Hi Jacqui:

The local volunteer has replied to state that he is not aware of any connection and he has asked another person who was also researching this same connection who has not been able to find anything further.

If you have taken a DNA test and can sift through your Irish results, send me any leads or hints, and we will try to follow them up.

    All the best,

    Jane
