I am trying to trace BRIDGET CAHILL   b.1846, who married  JOHN H. REIDY  b.1841.

They were married  on 25 February,1868, in Castletown, Limerick, Ireland.

Father of the bride was THOMAS CAHILL;  Father of the Groom was THOMAS REIDY.

( I know that marriages usually took place in the Bride's parish, so I have no proof that The Reidys were also residents in Castletown --but I assume they might have been. or close by.

Bridget and John's son,  Thomas F. Reidy, was born in Castletown on 18 Nov.,1869

A second son, John  Reidy, was also born in Castletown on 16 January, 1874.

They also had two daughters born in Limerick:  Mary  (b. Nov. 1873) and  Anna  (B. 1877). I do not know if they were born in Castletown, as I have not found those records. (ALL above found through Family Search)

They all emmigrated to USA in 1880, and settled in Chicago, Illinois. A third daughter, Elenora, aka "Nellie", was born there in 1883. John H. Reidy, Sr. was a Chicago Police Officer.  I do not know if he was also have been a policeman in Castletown?  He died in 1910 in Chicago, Il.  Bridget died in 1928 in Chicago .

Mary, Anna and Nellie were killed in the horrific Iroquois Theatre Fire in 1903, in Chicago. I include this, thinking perhaps there might have been mention of this tragedy in the newspapers in Limerick, or Castletown because the two older girls were born in Ireland.

John H. Reidy, Sr. had a brother, Michael and a sister, Annie Marie.  Annie is my Great Grandmother.  I believe their parents were: BRIDGET HANNAN and THOMAS REIDY

I do not have any other information about the Cahill Family, or the name of Bridget Cahill's mother.  I am hoping that if I can find anything else with the help of Ireland XO, I can  learn more about the Cahill Family, and about the Reidy Family. It would be wonderful to find "relatives" in either family who still live in Castletown!

I so appreciate your help!

Sincerely,

Eileen Murray

    • Hi Eileen

There are 2 baptism records of Bridget Cahill with father Thomas 1846 Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/

Castletown is not in the list of parishes (click on the magnifying glass at the end of the record).

      http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

The record will have the parish and POSSIBLY the mother's name but there is a cost to view the full record.

The irish phone book has Cahills in Castletown in Cork Laois Meath Westmeath & Wexford

    • Col:  Thanks for your searching the Baptisms and Irish phone books listings out for me!  I appreciate you taking the time :)

About now I am wishing that someone would post the phone number where we can "talk" with all these Irish ancestors who went on ahead, and left us with only questions!

    • Well--I have had an amazing breakthrough in finding where my REIDY family originated!

An unknown cousin found my information about this family on Ancestry.com, and contacted me for clarification; My Great-Grandmother, ANNIE REIDY was the sister of John H. Reidy, and since I could not find any info. on her predating her immigration to USA, I started researching again with his name...and my new cousin informed me that Anne had several siblings who remained in Ireland when she left.  He did NOT know of her existence til he found my family tree, and I did NOT know that she had additional siblings, or where her parents came from in Ireland. Now I finally do!

Anne Reidy was born in 1850, in Clonregan, Ballingarry, Limerick, Ireland;  she was the daughter of Thomas and Bridget (HANNAN) REIDY.  Thomas was a Farmer.  She and her younger brother, Michael, left Ireland to come to Chicago, Illinois, USA. in 1863.  Her oldest brother was John H. Reidy, and he made that same journey to Chicago,in 1880, with his wife and family.

Remaining in Clonregan were Thomas, Johannah, Bridget, and James.  They all married, raised families, and died in Clonregan.
