Hi All,

I am trying to get information about Fr david Nagle who was Parish Priest in Effin during the Great Famine.

I believe he died in 1847 and is buried under the alter in Effin Church.

I would like to know where he came from ,his age at death andn any information about his family.

I believe he is related to my great grandmother, possibly a brother or uncle.

I would really appreciate any help.

Jim Doyle

  • Hello Jim re your post I would suggest you take a look at www.rootsireland.ie which should have Baptism records for Limerick area. You will not be able to source Civil records as in Ireland these came in from 1864.
Do you have any other information i.e Parents names?

    Regards Frances

  • Thank you Frances !

I believe Fr Nagle came from the Charleville area and that his family may originally have come from Listowel.

It has been suggested that he was the brother of John, Catherine( Rooney) and Hannah (Cosgrove) but I think thats not correct given that Fr Nagle died in 1847.

I think its more likely they were Fr Nagle's nieces and nephew.

Catherine Rooney was my greatgrandmother and her birth registration(1864) cites a David Nagle as one of her sponsors !

    Many thanks again!

It  says  he  was  from  Morroe  Co  Limerick.

  • Hi  Jim    If  the  material  on  him  on  line  is  correct , and  he  is  from  Parish  of  Morroe.  Morroe  is  in  the  diocese  of  Cashel  and  Emly,  records  for  this  diocese  are  not  on  line.  They  can  be  accessed  at  Tipperary  Family  history  research,  email  research@tfhr.org.  Records  for    Morroe   started  in  1814.  a  small  fee  is  charged.

If  it  is  the  correct  person  he  would  have  studied  for  the  priesthood   probably  in  St  Patricks  College  Thurles  founded  in  1829.

    Hope  this  will  help.

  • Hi Jim,

Just came across your post. Two of my 4 x great uncles were baptised at St. Munchin’s, Limerick City in 1827 & 1830 by Fr. David Nagle. Hope this might help you in your search for details about him.
