Patrick Finn married Hannah Coleman and had a daughter Hannah Finn born 1871 in Charleville Co Limerick. I'm looking for any additional info anyone might have. Hannah left Ireland and went to Nova Scotia Canada and married Frank Harrison. Frank and Hannah then left Canada for Boston Massachusetts.

  • Hi there,

Do you have any dates for when they left Ireland? Do you know where Frank or Hannah came from? Were they from Limerick?

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Effin and Gamenderk (Limerick). These date from 1843 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2427, or at the Limerick Archives (http://www.limerickcity.ie/archives/). If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You should also check the 1901/1911 census records, just in case they were still living in Ireland during this time. You can find this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Limerick County Library also have a document that might be of use to you. 1852 'Analysis of the late election showing the entire list of the poll'.

You could check estate records for Effin. These are usually located at the National Library of Ireland (NLI):

The Earl of Kingston: Rental 1840. NLI Ms. 3276. Includes Effin.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sinead,

Thanks for giving me some information to follow up on.  The following is what we have found so far.

Patrick Finn Married Hannah (Coleman) Finn and had a daughter Hannah Finn born 7/12/1871 and Christened in Charleville, Limerick Ireland.  She was believed to emigrate to the US abt 1884.  Hannah died 6/22/1947 Boston, MA.  We haven't found any other information.  We got Hannah's parents name from her birth record.  That's all the information we have found.  I will try some of the other web sites you have given me.  Anything else you can help with would be greatly appreciated.

    Regard

    Dave
