My great grandad, John Fitzgerald was born in Kilbehenny in 1868 to William Fitzgerald and Margaret Tobin. I have a copy of their marriage certificate which shows they lived in Coolattin and their fathers were John Fitzgerald (Labourer) and John Tobin (Shoe Maker). They married on February 26th 1867 and the witnesses were Edmond Tobin and Mary Gallaher. My brother and I are going to visit the area in early October and wondered if anybody had any information that might help us find out any more. The family moved to Birmingham in England with their other children, James, Edmond and Denis but I wonder if any of William or Margaret’s brothers and sisters stayed and have descendants still living locally. I think William’s siblings might have been Maria, Catherine and James and Margaret’s might have been David, Patrick, James and John but I’m not certain about that. I’d be really grateful if anybody could help me. Thanks.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We have a parish liaison in Kilbeheny parish. I will send him an e-mail alerting him to your message. The 1901 and 1911 census records for Coolattin did show that Edmond and his family were living in the townland. Have a great trip!

  • Roger, thank you so much for such a quick reply; it was very kind of you. I’m really looking forward to visiting as I’ve never been to Ireland before.

  • Any Conection to the Tobins of the Townland of Corrigane which borders the village of Kilbeheny County Limerick but is in the Parish of Brigown Mitchelstown County Cork.

    On 1851 Griffiths Vaulation.

had John Tobin living on 13 Acres plot 1aA.b.& B. Townland of Corrigane.

His Son  John Jr. had around 20 Acres 1b.

& brother Patrick Tobin had 5.A.& B. Corrigane.

The house used to be behind where Miss Wallman used to live close to the Mitchelstown Road just as you come out of Kilbehenny village on the right.

Some of this large Tobin family married into the English family of Curragrom in 1860s 70s which is either in the parish of Mologga or Marshelstown or Kildorrery. Also some of this family are from Raheel corner Near Buncourt County Tipperary only about 6 or 7 miles away from Kilbeheny Some also married into the Lanes of Anglesborogh County Limerick.
