Hello! I have some questions about the following baptism record found on www.rootsireland.ie:

Name: Tim. Leary

Date of baptism: 28 Oct 1838

Parents: Dan. Leary & Margaret Hickey

Sponsors: Wm. Reddan & Johanna Daly

Parish: Kilmallock - Co. Limerick

I suspect this may be the same Daniel O'Leary/Leary and Margaret Hickey whose son Daniel wound up in Chicago.  I've been eyeballing this couple as possible parents of my own ancestor, John O'Leary, who was born circa 1830 in Co. Limerick.  I believe there are some other siblings as welll, named David, Catherine, Timothy, James and maybe a Patrick; all born in the 1820-30s and wound up in Chicago, where they had various dealings with each other.

I would dearly love to find baptism records for the other children of the Daniel & Margaret of Kilmallock, which might help prove or disprove my theory.  Trouble is, it appears that Kilmallock baptism records begin in 1837, and most of my "suspects" were born before that.  So my questions are:

1) Do the Kilmallock baptism records begin in 1837 because earlier records didn't survive, or because the parish actually opened in 1837?

2) Are all extant baptismal records for County Limerick online at RootsIreland?  (The above baptism for Tim. was the only one that came up for parents named Daniel Leary & Margaret Hickey).

In other words... is there any hope of finding additional baptism records for this couple?  And if so, what would be the best way for me to proceed?

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

I saw your message the other day and did not respond hoping someone local would reply ( I live in Maryland). I have a resource book which covers availability of church records and it shows Kilmallock starts in 1837. I looked for info on Churches and I found three links below. One church was built in 1838 and I presume that is when records started. You can contact one of the churches for assistance but I think you will be told that the earliest records start in 1837. All the best.

  • I see a Tim Leary born 1838 and a Dan Leary born in 1825.  Those are the only two names I find with parents of Leary and Hickey.  But in my Ancestry.com tree, I do have a Michael O'Leary born in 1856 (don't know where) who married Mary Barry (my great grand aunt).  They were married in Chicago at St. Bridget's Church on 13 January 1884.  I believe they had four children:  Mamie, John Joseph, Margaret and Nellie.  Mary Barry was born in the Herbertstown area, very close to Kilmallock.  Her sister, Bridget, married James Cooke from Knockainey, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some connection.

This could be far-fetched, but thought I would throw it out there.
