Hello I'm tracing my family history and wondering if anyone has any info on my great grandparents.
They were Patrick and Mary Leary (O'Leary), they lived in Carrigkettle from about 1904. Marys father was Thomas Downes with whom they lived with originally according to the 1911 census.
There son Michael O'Leary (my grandfather) later moved to Knockgrena, Old Pallas where my father David O'Leary grew up.
Many thanks
Adam O'Leary

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is a link to the civil marriage record from February 17, 1903. You will have to sign-in to see the record.

I located Mary Downes and her father in the 1901 census in Carrickittle. I could not locate a related record for the O'Learys in Carrickittle even though the 1903 marriage record indicates they were from Carrickittle. Possibly they moved to the townland after March 31, 1901.

I located Mary's birth record in 1879 on Roots Ireland. Her mother was Bridget Dwane.

  • To Adam,

I know it's been four years since this was made but I'm working on my family tree and here's what I've got.

Your grandfather Michael had a big brother called John shown in the census.

John was born in 1904 and married a woman called Anne (Annie) Riordan (I'm unsure the date of marriage) and he died in 18/10/1986 and is buried in Emly with his wife and sister in law. https://historicgraves.com/emly/ts-emog-0608/grave

John would of been my great grandfather and so Michael your grandfather, is my great- granduncle.

I hope this information is of use, thank you for the post and thank you Roger for the reply it has been very helpful on my family tree.

    Eric

  • Hi Adam,

My name is Tom O'Toole, I'm originally from Hospital, Co. Limerick and Thomas Downes was my great grandfather. His son Michael, (a brother of Mary Downes) was my grandfather. He married Mary Connell (O'Connell) in Kilteely Church on 28/2/1911. They had two children, Brigid Downes my mother, who was born in Carrigkettle in 1912 and Thomas Downes my uncle. My uncle was born in Kilmallock on 2/12/1915 when they lived in Ballintubber which is between Kilfinane and Ballylanders. I presume that Michael, who was a labourer, was working there at the time as this is the address on the birth certificate. I cannot find any trace of Michael after this date and neither my mother or my uncle ever spoke about their father. I'm very interested in finding out what happened to him. I cannot find a death certificate for him.

Thomas Downes was Married in Kilteely Church on 12/2/1865 to Bridget Devine. Their son Michael was born in Carrigkettle on 10/10/1871 according to the registration of his birth. However I found a baptism record for a Michael, born to Thomas Downes and Bridget Dwyer on 26/9/1871 with sponsors Jermiah Ryan and Bridget Mulcahy, Carrikettle.

It appears as if there is some confusion about Bridget's surname, Divine, Dwane, Dwyer but on thier marriage registration her name and her fathers name is clearly written as Divine.
