I am desparately seeking information on Margaret SHANAHAN who married David MCCARTHY 28 Feb 1843 Killeedy Catholic parish Co Limerick Ireland.  Witnesses to this union were  Edward Shanahan  and Maurice Shanahan.  I have no idea if either is her father or brother as I have no date of birth for Margaret. David MCCARTHY is the son of Eugene John (Eoghain) "Owen" McCARTHY and Johanna GRIFFIN who was baptized 23 Aug 1813 Mahoonagh Catholic parish, Co Limerick, Ireland along with his twin, Denis.  I have nothing further on David's parents with the exception of the names posted.  Charles, son of David, is my great-grandfather who immigrated to the USA and married Johanna "Elizabeth" EDWARDS dau of Daniel EDWARDS and Johanna FOLEY.

  • Hi Charlene

There are 6 baptism records for Margaret Shanahans born 1815 + - 10 years in Cork on www.rootsireland.ie/

None has father Edward or Maurice though

    The years are: 1809 1811 1812 1814 1819 & 1825

They all were from North & East Cork and Kilkeedy was not in the list.

  • Greetings Col:

Thank you for your reply.  I appreciate your assistance in this Shanahan / McCarthy Mystery.  Edward and Maurice witnessed their marriage so I presumed one could be her father.

The Tithe time period, 1832 for Killeedy. At that time, we find the ever helpful Widow Shanahan in Killeedy townland, as well as a Maurice. We have David and William in Coolaleen, Timothy in Creen and Rahanna, and then it appears that David also has a bit of land in Kilcoora. David was by far the biggest land holder of these folks, with about 75 acres. The others had less than 20 acres each, with Maurice and William each having just 7 acres.

    Once again, thank you!
