I'm glad I found this site!
My great, great grandparents were born in or around Limerick Parish. My great grandfather, Charles C. McCarty was born in Limerick in 1845. My great Gramma was Bridget Higgins, 1844, birth place unknown.
Their first child was born in Newfoundland Elizabeth, in 1868. My great grandmother, Mary Ann McCarty, was born in 1881 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
I was hoping to find out anything about the family before they left Ireland. It would be amazing to find out about great, great uncles or aunts that stayed behind. The furtherest back I could find was that Charles C. Mccartys dad was also Charles and Bridget's dad was Michael Higgins and her mom was Ellen Carmody. A lot, but I'm hoping for more!

The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household for Co. Limerick showed a Charles McCarty in Shannaboola townland in St. Munchins parish in Limerick City. Likely this is your GGGF. Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has RC and C of I records for the 1800s so you may want to check out this site which is a pay site.
The 1901 census only shows 10 Mccartys in Co. Limerick including a few in Limerick city. However, it is possible that some members of the family could have spelled the name as Carty (there were 19 Cartys).

I have never of Shannabooly, or St. Muchins Parish. I guess I have a lot of work to do!
I do know that by the time he passed, they called him McCarthy. My great grandfather that is.
