Hello

My parents will be making their first trip to Ireland in Sept.  They would like to find their way to some of the sites and areas from which my mom's family hailed. I have posted queries here previously and was so glad for helpful info given. So quick family run down is the following:

John H O'Connor dob 1847 near Cahermoyle per his obituary in Chicago Irish Families 12/10/1892. His brother was Daniel dob 1852. The write up in Chgo Irish Families states John H O'Connor came to Chicago after participating in the Fenian Uprising of 1867 attack on the Ardagh Constabulary led by his uncle Patrick O'Connor. We know from burial records in Chicago he is related (possible first cousin) to the Chicago gangster, Tommy O'Connor who escaped hanging sentence in Chicago and is believed to have fled back to his home area in the Cahermoyle area of Limerick.

Daniel P Murphy dob Dec 1831 in Loghill Limerick per his obit in the Chicago papers. With the help of Col and others on this site, I believe he was baptized in Newcastle West 12/12/1831. I know his father was Denis Murphy and he had brothers Patrick dob 1825 and Michael dob 1844.  The bap certs for them all indicate their mom was Maria Cronin. Michael married Margaret Enright in Ireland. Daniel P Murphy's oldest daughter married John H O'Connor in Chicago. So I think the families were from the same area in Limerick.

When my parents come in Sept, they want to stop in the Rathkeale and Loghill area to see if there are any churches or cemeteries where some family could be. Would there be any church with possible records? Also, is the Ardagh constabulary still standing? Could they see anything about the Fenian Uprising John H O'Connor was part of?

I am going to post this on the boards for Rathkeale, Loghill, Ardagh and Rathronan also in case others who might have ideas are only monitoring those parishes.

Hoping someone can give us guidance for my parents. They have waited for so long to get to Ireland! Much MUCH thanks for any help!

  • Dear Jeanie:  Many thanks for your post to Ireland Reaching Out.  We have several local volunteers in that area who will be able to assist you and I have copied this post to them.  It sounds like a very interesting family history and please be sure to keep us posted with your travel plans.  If you don't hear back from anyone in the next week or so, please email me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.  Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out!  All the best,  Jane

  • Dear Jeanie:

I have heard back from one of our volunteers to state that she cannot add anything further to your history, but she recommended several things:

    1.  Patrick Henry served time in the UK Royal Navy (details of his ships etc. are found on the National Archives.gov.uk and he had two numbers I think; D2844 and B2870. ( I don't know if you were aware of this on the National Archives or not).

    2.  There are two Ancestry trees on Ancestry.com who both have Patrick on them and it might be worth contacting at least one of them.  They are looking for the same details that you are looking for, and it is correct to state that the Burgess family did originate in Aghada, Cork.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hi Jane

So I am a little confused.  The records that the volunteer looked at indicated that John H O'Connor's uncle is named "Patrick Henry"? I am uncertain what trees they saw on Ancestry...I tried to search but I have so little info it was impossible to guess which trees the volunteer was looking at.  Also, what Burgess family did the volunteer look at? I do not have any Burgesses in the tree at least as far as I know of at this point. So I am confused.

When my parents arrive in Sept, is there anything there to see? I mean the travel agent has them routing through there but they have NO idea what is what there.  They are in their 70s but have never been to Ireland before.  What should I advise them regarding this leg of their trip?

Let me know how it is best to proceed. and as always, much thanks!

  • Hello

Following up on my earlier inquiry because I have a bit more info. I am looking for any followup leads for the Murphy family with these members:

Denis Murphy m Maria Cronin married Newcastle West 1829

Children all baptized in Newcastle West:

Daniel P 1831-1893 (death in Chicago), John 1833, Patrick 1835 (lived eventually in Mound City IL), Mary 1836, Ellen 1839, Margaret 1842, MIchael 1844 (married Margaret Enright and emigrated to Australia), Elizabeth 1847, Eames or James 1852, Denis 1855.

In addition, I have found a summary of a Rockite Rebellion in Feb 1822 and trial in Apr 1822. Fifty-one men arrested and tried with some sent to Australia. Among those listed as arrested were a Denis Murphy, John Enright and Michael Hanrahan.  I think maybe this Denis Murphy is my Denis Murphy?  Possible?  John Enright might be the father of Margaret Enright who married one of Denis Murphy's sons (Michael), and then Michael Murphy and MArgaret Enright Murphy emigrated to Australia and headed to met Michael Hanrahan, who was one of the 51 arrested with Denis Murphy.  Seems like a lot of cross over coincidences.....does any volunteer from Newcastle WEst area or Loghill (birthplace in death notice for Daniel P Murphy 1831-1893) have a better understanding of the Rockite Rebellion 1822 and my possible family connection to it?

Any possibility of any of the these Murphys still in area?  I am coming to visit Ireland in June.....

    Thanks for all advice
