I also have ancestors that lived in Rathjordan – the children of my 3G grandparents James Kirby and Catherine (Gubbins) Kirby were baptized there from about 1827-1841.  

In sync with Claire Doyle’s recommendation that you find out the names of any of your 2G grandmother Catherine’s siblings, you might be interested in this.

Just yesterday (before I saw your post), I found a John Kirby and MARY HOGAN in Rathjordan with children John 1838, Ellen 1840, Biddy 1842, Kitty 1844, Mary 1846, Margaret 1848 and Daniel 1851.  (Source: NLI Catholic Parish Records (Hospital-Herbertstown parish)

Perhaps MARY HOGAN is a sister to Catherine Kitty Hogan, your 2G grandmother.  I don’t yet know if this John Kirby is related to my ancestor James Kirby, but he probably is.

In Griffith’s Valuation 1847-1864 for Rathjordan, I found a PATRICK HOGAN and a JAMES HOGAN.  In the Tithes records 1833, there is a JAMES HOGAN in Rathjordan.  No Mocklers.

At any rate, there’s a good chance our ancestors knew each other and went to the same church.

Hi Janet,

John Hogan and James Hogan of Rathjordan, Co. Limerick are on record as 1831 tithe defaulters. As you know, many Irish Catholics refused to pay the unfair tithe (religious tax) to the state protestant Church of Ireland between 1830 and 1836.

Among 28 names for Rathordan are also the names Timothy Minahan, John Maugher and Patrick Maugher.  Also, my Kirby ancestor James Kirby.

Was one of your Hogans a TD (Member of parliament) in Ireland in the early 1920s?

Good evening -- My family (Barry/Cullen) is from Rathjordan.  My great-great grandparents, Margaret Cullen and Daniel Barry lived there when their first son, William, was born in December 1846.  His sponsors at Baptism were ??? Harty and Mary Hogan.  I wonder if this is part of your Hogan family.  

I would be interested in hearing any information you might have on this family as Rathjordan is a very small townland.  Sometimes it is included with Clogherviller townland, just in case you don't see it listed.  The Barry family still lives on that land in Clogherviller.

Hi. Looking for information on my great grandfather PK Hogan. Served as a TD in the 1920s. I recall my grandmother mentioning Rathjordan House, was our ancestry home, any information greatly appreciated.

Your great grandfather is buried in the family grave at Patrickswell (old) cemetery near Lough Gur. Some of the family settled in Patrickswell.

We found the other patrickswell (lough gur) after I posted this query, but never found PK's grave. I found my grandfather's Cecil Hogan as he was buried in the family plot there with his grandparents Kate & Edmond Hogan. We also located the family home Rathjordan house and family buriel ground, but was far too overrun to see any head stones.

A local man who is now deceased and who lived next to the old cemetery in Patrickswell told me many years ago that PK was interred in the Hogan family grave in Patrickswell. This man actually remembered PK's funeral. Back in 2000 I attempted to record the inscriptions in Rathjordan cemetery but was unable to do so as the cemetery was completely inaccessible due to its overgrown state.
