Hello

We are looking for information on our grandfather Charles McCarthy born on the Square Rathkeale 4 April 1879. His father was David McCarthy and mother Mary Carmody, married21 march 1860 in Kilcloman. Mary was baptised Oct 12, 1836 in Kilcolman/Coolcapagh father Daniel Carmody. Her mother was possibly Ellen Nunan, but not sure. I believe her brother was John Carmody bap. 01 Oct 1840

I can not find any record of Mary Carmody/McCarthy dying. In the 1901 and 1911 censuses, David said he was married, but his wife Mary can not be found. David died about1925 in Rathkeale.

I am trying to connect David McCarthy with Charles McCarthy the corn merchant of the square born 1803, died 27 Jan 1870 reported by Buck McCarthy. Birth record of David may verify this connection.

Also, trying to find out more about Mary Carmody/McCarthy. Could she have ended up in an asylum or hospital during the censuses? And more about the Carmodys in general.

Thanks!

  • Dear Eliza

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. I take it you have searched the Census outside of the immediate area for a record of Mary?

Also I wonder if the Newspaper Archives might refer to David's death and lead then to a record for Mary a possibly a headstone. It's a subscription site but you can buy credits for a short period:
