I am searching for anyone who had ancestors with the surname of RYAN or GREEN (e) who lived in or near a place named Coorass or even Coorus (have come across several different spellings but it was near Newport) around 1830.  I don't believe these families stayed in Ireland so perhaps these descendants may be in Australia or even the USA today.

  • I have been working on several family names and my Mother's (Mary Jane Grady), Grandmother's (Katherine McGinn), Grandfather (Charles Ryan) was a Ryan. Most of the information I have was for immigrants before the dates you mention. However, the situation appears to have been fluid with some coming and going back to Ireland before most moved to the US. Families seem to have moved across parish and county lines in Ireland more frequently than I had expected. I will post any additional information I find.

I found information in the Canadian Irish Portal, Census and New Brunswick web sites with links to GenWeb:

    Kings County GenWeb
    New Brunswick - Canada
    Sussex Parish Cemetery Listings
    L-05 Sussex Corner - Cemetery
St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Cemetery
Ward's Creek, Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB

    Ryan:  - Charles  d.  1869 ae 70
                  wife Margaret Dunn  d. 1881 ae 95
A voluntary exile from Queens Co, Ireland about 1815,
and made his home in this happier corner of the Empire.
                  (rear) their children:
                  Winnifred Flood         Thomas
                  Sarah Monahan           James
                  Patrick                 Charles
                  Maria McGinn            Ellen Cogger
                  John E.         (erected in 1929)

There are a number of other Ryan's listed there. I also found Ryan's in PRONI which does include records for areas now in the Republic of Ireland.

    Sincerely

    Mary Lou Ni Maire

  • Thanks Mary Lou, Ryans were thick on the ground in Ireland so it is going to be difficult to find the family for which I am searching but I have been working on it for years and am not about to give up now!

I will go back to PRONI and do a more intense search.  The place name of "Coorass" is definitely connected to the Ryans for whom I am searching as I have a newspaper story which confirms it.  That place seems to no longer exist so anyone who could nail down the exact location would be a great help.

There was a Coolrus House I have tracked down which was in the Civil Parish of Ballingarry which is the area I am pretty certain the Ryans came from, so it may be that the newspaper report refers to that.

The group of Ryans I am researching contain a Timothy Ryan, Denis Ryan Senior and Denis Ryan Junior and a John Ryan.  These fellows plus Patrick Ryan were all working together in "Coorass" according to the newspaper but how they were related to each other I have no idea.
