The Irish tradition of giving a nickname to certain branches of families to identify them from others of the same name may be now the only tool I have left to use with which to find my Ryans.

My Ryans came from in or around the Rathkeale area and I am looking at a period between about 1800 to 1830.

They were identified as the "Shine" Ryans.  Has anyone else either come across this nickname or has anyone got these Ryans in their Family Tree?

I would be so grateful if anyone could help with any information about anyone bearing the name "Shine Ryan".

  • Yes thanks Rory, I did think of that, but didn't haven't any luck so far.

    Will keep trying.

There is a connection with the Greene family also if that helps.
