I am hoping that someone might be able to help with the families of LAWLOR/LAWER and HENNESEY/HENNESSY who were from the Limerick area.

John Hennesey was a Clerk of Petty sessions in Shanagolden, Limerick and as far as we know John Lawlor was a Bootmaker/Shoemaker in Askeaton, Limerick. They would have both been born around 1790 to 1805.

John Hennesey died in 1885 in Shanagolden and was married to Margaret GINNANE, but unfortunately we have not been able to find anything on John Lawlor's death nor his marriage.

William Lawlor of Askeaton, son of John, and Elizabeth Hennesey of Shanagolden were married at Shanagolden in 1862. William was said to have been born in Askeaton 24th January 1838 and Elizabeth Hennesey was born C1838.

William and Elizabeth had 2 children before they emigrated to Australia in 1865, Mary was born in 1863 and Margaret Eliza in 1865.

Looking forward to learning about our Irish families,  Christine Mackay christinemackay@optusnet.com.au

  • Hi Christine

There are 2 baptism records of John Lawlor in Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/

One is John Lawlor 1800; the other is JohnLalor 1806; neither is Askeaton howvere.

There is a record of the baprism of William Lalor but it is 1841 Limerick but it is not Askeaton either.

There are quite a few death records of John & William in Limerick on rootsireland.ie

  • There is a family tree at Ancestry.com called "Arrival in Australia." I believe this tree is your Lawlor family. This is what I've copied and pasted for you:

"William and Elizabth Lawlor came to Australia (Rockhampton) on the ship "The Royal Dame".They moved on and settled in Tenterfield, and William was a well respected, seemingly affluent farmer. They were pioneers of the district and their names are on a list of early settlers in a memorial park in the town. William was also a flour miller by trade."

And these are some pertinent facts that I believe tie your family to this one (and maybe fill in some information that you lacked.)

    • Elizabeth Hennessey and Wm. Lawlor were married 5 Nov 1862. No place given.
    • In this family there is a Margaret Elizabeth b 1865 and also a Mary (along with a beautiful photo!) who was born in Limerick in 1863. Mary lived to be 100 years old, as she died in 1963.
    • According to this family tree, William and Elizabeth had 13 children.
    • William Lawlor, born 24 Jan 1836 in Askeaton, died in 1921 in New South Wales.
    • William's wife, Elizabeth Hennessey b 14 June 1843 Askeaton, died 21 Aug 1930 Botony, New South Wales, Australia. (There is also a photo in this tree for Elizabeth!)
    • Both Elizabeth and husband Wm. are buried in the Botany Cemetery, New South Wales.
    • Elizabeth Hennessey Lawlor's parents were: John or Patrick Hennessey and Mary Ann Halpin.
    • Mary Ann Halpin was born 10 Sept 1820.

You will want to go to your local library (if you don't have an Ancestry.com subscription) and look at this family tree. This is just a tiny part of what is online at Ancestry.com.

    Best wishes!

  • Hi John,

I have done as you suggested and entered Tom's information into google and came up with a number of hits so I will certainly making contact with him today. Hopefully he is from our family as then he should be able to fill in many gaps.

Regarding the death record you sent I would love to be able to find out where this John was buried as his gravestone, if still legible, may help to prove this is our John. Do you know if there have been any transcriptions done for the cemeteries in the area ?

Thank you so very much,  Cheers Christine from Australia

    Hi John,

As you suggested I have found Tom Lawlar Kitchens and sent them an e.mail but as I didn't receive a reply I sent them another e.mail last week, but to date there has not been any replies from him.

As I didn'tt receive any reply I tried to bring up the webpage through google once again but now the website seems to have gone ???
