  • Kevin:

Following up on Col's excellent research, here is the 1901 census for the family. Helen was shown as Ellie and it appears that some of the children either died young or were living with relatives since only five are shown. They lived in Kilmoylan civil parish just to the south of Shanagolden parish.

I also found the 1911 census record and the mother was still living in 1911 so if this is the correct family, she did not die in 1903.

I searched for civil death index records in the Ratkeale registration district and found one in 1899 for a James born around 1834. Not sure if this is the correct record.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Kevin:

The Roots Ireland indexes have an 1833 baptismal record for a James Mangan with father Denis Mangan and mother Ellen Nolan. The baptism was in the Kilcolman/Coolcappagh RC parish which is the parish immediately to the south of Shanagolden.

I think the civil death index record I sent you would be correct since the year of birth 1834 is very close to 1833.
