Hi, We have traced my partner- Ray McNamara's McNamara and Byrne ancesty back to Ireland to a marriage between Daniel McNamara and Catherine O'Shaughnessy 28 Feb 1832 in Shanagolden.  Any assistance would be appreciated but the other text below warns of complexity.

We have lots of branches yet to trace in Clare and KIlkenny on his grandfather's side also but at least we have that date and place if anyone there can point us to more information for the two above.  We think Catherine O'Shaughnessy's parents were James O'Shaughnessy and Catherine O'Hanlon and Daniel McNamara's parents were Daniel McNamara and Catherine Connell.

Over time Byrnes and McNamaras intermarried and this branch is from his maternal GGM's side. We have yet to find the McNamara from his father's side ie Patrick McNamara from Kilkenny and Mary Elizabeth (or Mary Ellen) who was a McNamara on both her parents side - from Clare.  Very complex to track back given the family names  - on both Ray's grand father's side and his grandmother's side (nee Byrne) there were McNamaras maiden names and married names a number of times.. isn't genealogy fun.

  • Hello,

Do you have a McNamara tree on Ancestry.com? If you mention that in your original query, it allows the person you've asked for help to pinpoint which family is yours. (A tree usually provides more info than is posted in the query.) There is a tree owned by Raymond John McNamara. If this is not your tree, then I am sure you'll want to view it as it contains lots of info! This researcher appears to have most of the info you posted in your query.

I do not want to duplicate research that's already been done, but as the Parish Liaison for Shanagolden I have access to the church rcds. If this is your McNamara tree, what further info do you hope to find? Unless your family were wealthy, it is very difficult to find rcds much earlier than the very early 1800's.According to the Ancestry.com McNamara tree, this researcher is back to about 1790. Kudo's!!

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Best wishes,

    Patti Hacht

  • Thanks Patti, That is our tree under Raymond John McNamara but there are a couple of entriest that I am not comfortable with - tricky with the nee McNamara becoming married McNamara and all with very similar parent and sibling lists so I think there may be an error or two in there that I need to get BDM certificate to prove or amend.   We really only want to know what villages locations they came from (where born, married, died or when emigrated (so far we only have some County level indicators) so that we can visit when we are able to travel to Ireland again. If there is other generations we can find out about, that is great, but our core purpose is to find out where Ray's ancestors came from.  We were  in Ireland last year and visited most of mine (Scanlan, Carroll, Melican) but we are only just scratching the surface on Ray's side.  Please let me know if you need me to give you access to Ray's tree on Ancestry and thank you in anticipation. We have a death notice that notes the Shanagolden marriage but that is our total of information prior to immigration to Australia and the only town name we have. We don't yet have the immigration information either.  Please let me know if you need that death certificate also and I can dig it out to attach for you. Thank you. Fran Carroll for Ray McNamara and his family.
