I am descended from Jeremiah and Bridget Kennelly (I have seen a number of spellings). According to their tombstone, Jeremiah was born in the Parish of Shanagolden, County Limerick. He died at the age of 75 on March 24, 1890 and is buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Friendsville, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania with his wife Bridget.  She was born in Robertstown, County Limerick and died at the age of 70 on December 9, 1887 at the age of 70.  Bridget's maiden name may have been Shaughnessy.  There is a church record at St. Senan's in 1839 for the marriage of Dermot Kennelly and Bridget Shaughnessy.  The priest told me that Dermot is Irish for Jeremiah.

  • Hi,

It's so nice to hear from you! In addition to being the Parish Liaison for Shanagolden, I am also a Purtell researcher. There was a Lawrence Purtell ( a great uncle?) in Binghamton, NY, and there were also Purtells in Friendsville, PA.  Also a Friendsville Purtell family made its way to Ann Arbor, MI. My John Purtell emigrated from Kilcolman, Co Limerick to Binghamton in abt 1850. By 1854 he and his family were in St. Clair Co, Michigan. The Purtell families frequently moved between Friendsville and Binghamton. It is rewarding to see that there is a Shanagolden connection!

I don't know that I can help you much as the church rcds don't begin till about 1830. Perhaps  my "feet on the ground in Ireland", John O'Connell will see this post and have further info for you.

Are you aware of Mary Keenan's book about her Curley and Kennelly family from Friendsville? I have her email address if you contact me directly at: Duncaha@gmail.com The book is available in its entirity online at the Mormon (Brigham Young University?) site. Years ago Mary and I worked together, trying to connect our two Purtell family. I think she mentions me on Page 16 of her book.

In the meantime, you are welcome to contact me directly.

    Best wishes,

  • Patty,

That connection is amazing.  Mary Keenan has been very helpful to me with St. Francis Xavier Church and cemetery records.  I was not aware that she had written a book.  I will definitely seek it out.

I am interested in your family's migratory pattern.  I cannot track down some of my Dugan and Kennelly family members after the 1880 census.  Were there others from Susquehanna County that ended up in Michigan with your family?

Thank you for the quick response.

    Jean

  • Hi Jean.

Sorry I haven't answered earlier, but I only today saw this reply from you.

My Purtells came into Binghamton. Laurence b cir 1810 emigrated there first, it seems around 1850. I did find him in the one of the Famine Emigrant books. He came with other Purtells that I did not recognize the names of - another family it seemed. I guessed Laurence may have been a sibling of the father of the family.

My James Purtell and Mary Ann Madigan came to Binghamton around 1850 too. A child of theirs was born in Binghamton in 1851. By 1857, the family was in Emmett, ST. CLAIR CO, Michigan. By 1870 MaryAnn was dead, and the family was in Kawkawlin, Bay Co, Michigan.

I do know that one of the Friendsville Purtells moved to Washtenaw Co, Michigan. There is a Washtenaw Co history book online that tells the story of how he came over with his parents from Ireland and settled in Friendsville before moving to near Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co, Michigan.

There is also another relative, Robert Purtell b cir 1808. I think he may be a brother to Laurence and my John, but descendants of Robert's family do not believe the three were brothers. Anyway, I share a DNA connection (we match) with descendants of Robert and those descendants used to visit "their relatives" at the Purtell Dairy Bar my family still owns in Kawkawlin, Bay Co, Michigan. Robert emigrated to LaSalette, Ontario around 1840. He married Mary McCarty and they had several kids in LaSalette. Both parents died there. One of their children moved to Midland, Michigan where their descendants still live.

That's as much as I know about any migratory patterns. I do also know that the Purtells moved back and forth between Binghamton, NY and Friendsville, PA.
