I am in search of information on my Great Great Grandfather, Michael Finnan.  I believe he was born in Longford County, Ireland in the year 1821, but some on Ancestry say its 1825.  He married Margaret Farrell, (her father was Patrick Farrell and her brother was Bernard Farrell). They all came to the US and settled in DeKalb County, IL.  Michael and Margaret had four sons all born in DeKalb County, IL. I have hit a brick wall trying to find out anything about Michael's parents, siblings, etc.  Anyone with some information would be very appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The subscription site Roots Ireland has three baptismal records in Ardagh and Moydow RC parish: 1823-1824-1825. The transcription of the 1825 record is below. There is also an 1821 record in another parish. Have you looked for a death record or possibly an obituary for Michael which might provide parents names.

In the interim, you could post a story about Michael's emigration and life in America on our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will notice a connection. https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Diane:

So I'm assuming you can't locate a death record or obituary?

Have you considered DNA testing? You may match someone on your Finnan line and possibly they know which parish in Longford.

I have gone my DNA through Ancestry, but I have no connection with any Finnan's in Ireland. I have attached my DNA results.

Any help would be appreciated.  Diane

  • Hi,

I have Finnan's (Finnen, Finnin, etc.) in my family - from Longford County.  Ardagh diocese, Granard, Killeen keep coming up in records.  First immigrated to Scotland before going the the U.S. in 1854.  Lived in NYC over 20 years before moving to Kansas.

Laurence Finnen married Anne Coleman in 1831.  Children's names are:  Patrick, Michael born in 1834 (?), Francis, John, Anna, Hugh (possibly born in Scotland) and Margaret (born in Scotland)

Scotland Census 1851 show only Laurence, Ann, Patrick, Francis Hugh and Margaret.  I assume Michael, John and Anna had died before 1851.

Spelling of last name is all across the board until settling on Finnin in the states after 1863.

  • Hi

Thanks for adding this information.  I have a feeling that your family in not directly related to my Finnan's or we could be but it's hard to tell.   The Michael Finnan on my side died in the US and is buried in DeKalb County, IL in St. Mary's Cemertary.  It is so hard trying to research my Finnan side...the spelling (probably) was changed from Ireland. I which I could go there and spend time researching, but I have a job.  I do not have any information on which parish he was from. Are you on ancestry.com?  I have a tree going and did the dna test in December.  I have linked up to a Farrall who lives in Ireland but no Finnan as of yet.  Fingers cross that someone will match.  Thank you Diane
