My geat great grandmother was Catherine Brady of Co. Longford.  To the best of my knowledge, she was born around 1794 or 1795.  She died November  21, 1872 in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.  Catherine met her future husband Skelton Brooks on the boat to Canada.  They married in Quebec in 1830 so they probably left Ireland in 1829 or 1830.  The Co. Longford group provided me with the following information on two Catherine Brady baptisms in Granard parish from the period.

Catherine, daughter of Andrew Brady and M. Kenny, baptised in December, 1793

Catherine, daughter of John Brady and E. Monaghan, baptised in August, 1796.

Any tips on other types of records that may exist from this period would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Jane Hamilton

  • Hi Jane,

    Thank you for your message.

It may be difficult to find more records that will help you confirm which record is your Catherine as it can be difficult to find records pertaining to births, deaths and marriages prior to 1800-it is actually quite lucky that records in Granard have an earlier start date than in most other parishes. Have you tried looking into other records pertaining to Catherine that may help you, such as her marriage certificate or death certificate? One of these may have one or more of her parents? names listed. Do you know if Catherine had any brothers and sister whose records you could also look for?

Sorry I couldn?t be of more help, here are some websites that you may find useful:

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
