I am looking for people who may be related to the following family or any information some one might know. Michael McMahan or McMahon was born about 1808 he was married to Rosa Purcell born 1817. They had the following childern: Patrich, Mary, Rosa, Bridget, and Owen Thomas born May 1842. This family may have been members of this parish. Owen Thomas is my great grandfather and papers we have says he was from Longford. I hope some one can help me out. They came to the united states after the time Owen was born, but in the 1845 to 1850. Thanks for any help. Otto Anderson U.E.

  • I also am seeking a McMahon family from Creggan parish.  I have only one record of them, besides a brief note in an old family Bible.

A record of the marriage of Michael McMahon to Jane Cunningham was found in the IFHF as follows:

Date of Marriage:  12 Nov 1826
    Parish/District:    Upr Creggan
    County:        Co. Armagh
    Name:        Michael McMahon
    Name:        Jane Cunigham (sic)
    Denomination:    Roman Catholic (both)
    Husband's father:    McMahon

I know that they had a daughter, Mary, as someone found a baptismal record for her, but no other records of baptisms for their other children, which included my great-great-grandfather, Owen McMahon, born May 17,1834, in County Armagh.

Source: Lower Creggan Roman Catholic Church 1845-1900.
1st June 1845, Mary of Michl McMahon and Jane Cunningham.
    Sponsor: Frank McShane.
From the information sent to us and the fact this child was baptized in Lower Creggan, I believe that the Cunningham’s were from the Upper Creggan parish and the McMahon’s were from Lower Creggan parish. I am told that it was usually the custom for a marriage to occur in the brides Church and the family to settle in the groom’s area.

An old family Bible indicates that Michael and Jane (Cunningham) McMahon came to America about 1846, but I believe their son Owen, and perhaps a brother Peter and maybe James, came to America prior to 1846.  I have no other information, and I would like to know the parents of Michael McMahon and Jane Cunningham, and any info about them.  Thanks so much.
