My greatgreatgrandfather Thomas Downey was born around 1820 in Ireland.   Thomas was the son of James Downey and Winifred Dorothy.   Thomas was married to Bridget Tyrell or Tirrell and they emigrated to Boston in 1847 with small children, Michael (born 1841), James (born 1843) and Thomas (born December 1846).  Bridget was the daughter of James Tyrell and Bridget Hurley.

I have been told that they came from Edgesworthtown but I have been unsuccessful in finding any records.

I would appreciate any help!!!

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has baptism records for Edgeworthtown back to 1837 so the Downey children should be there if that is where they were baptized. However, I had no success finding the Downey children in that parish. The only record I located which may be a lead is an 1842 baptism in the Longford RC church for a James Downey son of John and Brigid. I could not determine the surname of the mother.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for your help.   Would Goldsmith's Village be the same parish as Edgeworthtown?  Can you give me some ideas of surrounding parishes, so perhaps I could look there?

    Thanks again!

Edgeworthstown is in Mostrim civil parish. Goldsmith's village is Ardagh which is in the civil parish of Ardagh which is immediately to the west/southwest of Mostrim. Mostrim is also bordered by Templemichael, Clonbroney, Granard and Street civil parishes. Co. Westmeath borders Mostrim parish to the east and southeast.

  • I have made some progress in my search for my 2x great grandparents Thomas and Bridget Tyrell Downey.  I found a baptismal record for James Downey on Roots Ireland.  James was baptized on 20 August 1842 (his parents are listed as Thomas Downey and Brigid Tyrl) - for Parish/District it has Longford, and for County it has County Longford.  Do you have any suggestions as to how to determine the exact parish based on that information?

    Thank you.

Good to hear that you had some success. I'm guessing since the record was from the Longford town RC church, the Catholic parish was St. Mels which is the cathedral parish of the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. The Cathedral was burned down in 2009.

By the way, next summer the National Library will be providing all RC parish registers online for free searching.

  • Thank you - would I contact St. Mel's for a copy of the baptismal records?

  • Catherine:

Here is the link to St. Mels.http://www.longfordparish.com/    They are busy now with the re-opening of the Cathedral in 12 days. Also, I don't know if the records were destroyed in the fire or were kept in a separate location. The National Library has the records on microfilm.
