In searching the Templemichael parish registers I notice that in a death record for a woman, it gives two surnames, one as an alias. For example: Elenora Murphy alias Murdagh, Dunbeggin.  Would Murphy be her married name or her maiden name?

I also saw a location in the death records list Derryharra, which I understand is a townland in County Longford. I have not been able to find this location on a map in Longford. Is there another name for this location?  Is there a way to match townlands to current locations?

Thank you,

Peadar

  • 'Derryharra' is probably a reference to the townland of Derryharrow, which is in Templemichael Civil parish and loctaed a short distance north of Longford town - see Placename database.

  • From my experience, the married name is usually given with the alias being the maiden name

'Alias' seems to be an older version of the more modern 'nee'
