Hi--I am trying to trace my great grandfather John Thomas Bogue and verify his place of birth and family line.  He would have been born around 1850, father is likely named John or Thomas.

My uncle had some research done around 30 years ago and they were unable to verify any information for him.  The family thinks he came from Fivemiletown area.  One bit of information that did surface in the research is from Brookeborough Estate Papers (D998/26/401). May 4, 1882 'Sir Henry Brookse Baronet to Felix Bogue: Lease for 2 lives Thomas Bogue aged 28 years, John Bogue aged 18 years.  10 acres in Cooneen in Manor of Brookeborough Co. Fermanagh.

Not sure what this means. Would Felix Bogue be their father? They later show up as residents of Fivemiletown, Thomas a as a grocer.

Thomas and John were likely brothers, based on their approximate years of birth, 1794 and 1804 respectively, they could be grandfather and or great uncle to my great grandfather John Thomas Bogue..

Thomas' wife is named Susanna, John's wife is Catherine. Marriage records indicate Thomas and /Susanna had at least two daughters, Susanna who married Joannis /Bogue of Clones 6 September 1857, and Maria who married Joannis McMahon on November 8, 1858. As our John Thomas Bogue was only born in 1850, It;s possible these would be his aunts, or remotely possible his older sisters.  Or perhaps no relation at all.    Trying to determine what other kids they may have had and whether our John Thomas Bogue traces to any of them.

Thanks for any help on this.  I'm just starting out the search.

  • Re the lease, what that means is that the Brookborough Estate had leaded Felix Bogue 10 acres of land in  Cooneen townland. It?s a two lives lease. Two and three lives leases were common in the 1700s and 1800s. The lease would run till the individuals in it died. So that could be quite a long time. It was popular with farmers as they had a guaranteed rent. There could be no rent increase till the lease expired, and that could be many years away. There was an element of risk of course. If the named people died quickly then the estate got the farm back, complete with a hopefully improved farm.

The reason their ages are given in the lease is that if Felix offered to sublet the land, the prospective buyers could see how long it was likely to last. (The price obviously reduces the less time a lease has to go).

The persons named in the lease could be anyone but in this context, they seem likely to be sons or other close relations.

Looking at the revaluation records for Cooneen, the only Bogue household listed at that time was plot 15b which was an agricultural labourers house on James Whitely?s farm. Frances Bogue rented that between 1886 and 1896. So that?s not the land in the lease. Possibly the Bogue family had sold their land on before the Griffiths clerks picked their ownership up. (They revisited every 2 or 3 years). Otherwise you would expect to seem them listed in those records.

In 1908 Peter Bogue acquired plot 23 (a 34 acre farm) in Cooneen. Can?t say whether it?s the same family as in the 1882 lease. Bogue seems a fairly common name in the area.

Some probate abstracts, from the PRONI wills site, that might be helpful relating to Bogues with connections to Cooneen:

Bogue Michael of Longfield county Fermanagh farmer died 29 January 1926 at Cooneen in said county Administration Londonderry 5 September to Lizzie Bogue spinster. Effects ?40 5s.

Bogue Patrick of Derrycrum Cooneen (Fivemiletown P.O.) county Fermanagh farmer died 11 April 1949 Administration Londonderry 25 July to John Bogue farmer. Effects ?730 3s. 10d.

The relevant probate files should be in PRONI, Belfast. Both men died intestate so there won?t be a will though.

Early RC parish records were compiled in Latin, so if it?s not obvious anyway, Joannis is just the Latin for John which is the name he would be known by in any civil records.
