  • Hi Dendar

as there is no approximate year it is difficult to search, all BMDs were recorded after 1864 so exist on the civil record and should be available here https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/General-Register-Office.aspx for a small fee, postal applications only but they will email reply. For €4 a short certificate is available. However the year of birth would be required if not more precise dates.

If in Dublin the registers can be accessed by visiting the offices in Ship Streeet and you can search yourself there for a small fee.

I searched online but found no Joseph Kelly with a Brodrick mother in Dundalk but there are a lot of Joseph Kellys and some have no mother listed. If post 1920 then often not online but you could try the free Family Search site which goes to 1956 I think, but you will get a lot of hits see https://familysearch.org/

If you can estimate a year let me know.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Dender,

If Joseph was born about 1896 the following link may be a possibility.  www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Louth/Faughart/Dungooly/15568…

  • Hi Dendar,

As a follow on to the last message posted on this discussion, I am looking at the Kelly family as well on behalf of a member of the family and I have that Joseph Kelly (born 1896) to James Kelly and Mary Kelly nee Lavelle ( or Lavill depending on which records you look at). Definitely not Broderick though so is that name a certainty? This Kelly family was from the Dungooley area to the Northwest of Dundalk heading for Castleblayney. I have encountered another Joseph Kelly who was from the Carrickarnon area on the northern border land between Dundalk and Newry. Do you have any other details of this person who you are researching? Dates and locations are a tremendous help when trying to uncover records. I know this message is coming a few years after your initial enquiry but if you have not had any further luck let me know as we might be both on the same track. I'm finding it difficult to get any further information on Joseph other than his birth record and the 1901 census. He wasn't home for 1911 ( nor was his younger brother James who was born in 1898). I could see Joseph possibly being farmed out to work but not James at the age of 13.  Best of luck with your research.

  • As a further comment to my last post, I remarked that James Kelly was born in 1898 when in fact he was born in 1893 so it would not be unusual for him to be out of home at 18 years of age.

  • Denise, if he was 60 when he died what year was it. There are over 100 baptisms for a Kelly / Broderick or Brouder marriage from 1790 to 1910, none in Louth that I can find, using the given parents Christain names reduces the number a lot, the only Kelly found was the one that was previously mentioned, Mother Lavelle, this couple had about 10 plus children. They do not appear to be in the 1911 census but not positive.

We really need a year or an approximate date to know more, the records should be on the free Irish Genealogy website, all BMDs post 1864.

    Good Luck

  • Pat,

I have seen the census for this family from 1911 for the father James and several of his children who were still living at home or unmarried but Joseph and his older brother James were not among them. The mother Mary died in 1903. Like you were saying to Denise it would really help to have some time frame for this person she is looking for to know where to start looking for records. Even the year he died would be of immense help. I do know that the James Kelly who was the father of Joseph was a farmer and not a carpenter though.
