I am trying to locate records on my great great grandfather and his parents/family.
Name. Peter Roney or Rooney
Birth. Probably 1824 (but possibly 1828 - I have conflicting records)
Place of birth. Dundalk according to his marriage cert in Australia
Emigrated to Australia. Approx 1850s (or jumped ship)

Wife. Sarah Brookman (ENGLISH) Married 1856 in Kyneton Victoria Australia.
Mother. Alice Crombie
Father. Patrick or Peter Roney/Rooney

My 2xgg Peter Roney must have swum to Australia as I can find no record of him arriving in Australia. Family folklore says he jumped ship to go to the goldfields as did so many in those days but there is no evidence of that in any of the deserters indexes in Australia.

I do know he used his mother's maiden name on his first 3 childrens birth certs in australia. So presumably he had something to hide.

I know a lot about him in Australia where he did very well ending up as farmer with multiple properties, publican, postmaster, store owner, mail contractor etc. He was heavily involved in politics and was a founding member of the Farmers Federation in Victoria. However I am at a brick wall with him and his famly and antecedants in Ireland.

I have checked Ancestry, find my past, Roots Ireland and Australian convict records.

I am visiting Ireland in week commencing 14 sept and would love to meet any relatives.
Kind regards

  • Hi Therese

firstly the Rooney name is fairly common in Louth. However Crombie is totally and there are two references to the name in Balriggan which is a rural area west of Dundalk. However the mention appears to be about land deeds. There is a Land Valuation Office but not sure it goes back that far. The website is

http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ and search Crombie for two hits. Searching Rooney is far more difficult      You can narrow it down.

I searched two other sites and the only hits for Crombie are in Westmeath and Dublin. See http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp and http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ in thismsitemeach hit may not be a separate person.

On the strange in this mornings Irish Times there was a photo of a national sporting event (hurling final) and I happened to notice it was attributed to the company Inpho / Crombie who I assume is the photographer the photo is on the website but only mentions company.

Also if the family were Protestant the records are better in the earlier 1800s and late 1700s. The Church of Ireland are currently been put on line for free and there is good records for Louth but not complete.

see http://ireland.anglican.org/about/151 FYI the Louth parishes are in Armagh and this is for church admin purposes so you will not see Louth.

a pay site is http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/ funny no Crombies but on ask about Ireland

  • Hi Therese

was using an ipad and the text goes off screen so I cannot see it but to quote my brother in law the problem is often the link between the chair and screen.

the Irish phonebook is on line and a few Crombies in Offaly and 1 in Westmeath were we saw them earlier. Try http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/#

When in Louth you should visit this site as it would be a shame to come this way and miss (my opinion).

See http://www.newgrange.com/ as they say a suggestion.

Here is the land that changed hands under the plantation and in that area I have had a few queries from people in Oz whose ancestors got land in the late 1600s. See http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/

The town land of Balriggan is in the parish of Faughart and has only 437 acres. Careful when searching as there is a large town 30 miles south in Dublin called Balbriggan.

If in Drogheda there are two restaurants a day tome one call The Salthouse and an evening one The Tower both owned by an Aussie.

I willl not be online much for personal reasons over the next cou[le of weeks but will check if you have questions.

    Regards

    Pat

  • Patrick, you should post in the Westmeath section include area of Westmeath if known, also some date would be needed and if possible at least one parent, if there are a number of Thomas Roney or Rooney born around the time it will not be possible to separate them otherwise. Any info you have really will make the searching easier, Civil births are free online from 1864 assuming registered. Earlier we rely on church records and they are not predictable as some parishes may go back to the 1700s (late) and others may not have any until the 1860s, even some older ones have gaps etc

Do you have a marriage or was he married elsewhere etc

By posting here on the original poster and myself see it. There may actually be a Westmeath volunteer who would have better local knowledge.

    Good Luck
