Hi to all,

just joined site so not sure of how to navigate, i would appreciate any help that may be forthcoming.

I was born in 1951 on Mourne Road and most of my family lived near to grand Canal street. I moved to England in 1957/8, and have only been back a couple of times.

I am interested in tracing my families roots both paternal Fanning, and Ryan maternal. Not had a great deal of luck so far. My parents did not reveal a lot of facts too us, so have had to rely on some guesswork and the odd photographs, and census 1901 & 1911

There is much more of course, so i tried to keep this brief, in case someone on this site is cross referencing these surnames and locations.

My name is Noel and woulld appreciate any correspondencein connection to the above

  • put the name (fanning)(or Fannings of Co dublin) as the subject matter, Not dublin

anyone reading the post will know at a glance the name you are researching.

i presume you have joined drimnagh on your parish List, add all the parishes

in a 5 mile radius to your list & join them, that will widen the search area for you.

i will not be of any more assistance to you, as i am in co limerick 130 miles away.

    regards

  • hello Noel i am also researching Fannings and live in England, my Fannings are from Drohgeda according to gt/gt grandfathers mariners record in 1858 his name was Edward Fanning , ithink he was born about 1823 but not sure. don't know if this would help you. if you would like any more info please get in touch and we can share info if you want because i'm also stuck on the Fannings i Ireland. • Hi pauline its nice to hear of someone who also following the same path.

I'm afraid up until now i have not managed to get back beyond 1878, as i mentioned in my initial comment, due to the lack of information conveyed to me, perhaps we were not inquisitve enough eh. I have made some progress via the 1901 & 1911 census of ireland.

At this time I have  no knowledge of any Edward Fannings within my family history, nor anyone from Drohgeda. I do know my Gt/gt grandfather was from Dundalk, same county of Louth. as Drogheda is.

I'm going over in April to try a couple of searchs in the librarys in Dublin, I'll be accompanied by my older brother (he knows his way round) ha ha .

I was told by some people, to avoid rumour and guesswork and only deal in facts, but this is easier said than done with so few records available. Apparently it is not true that most of the recods were destroyed by fire during the uprising. The actual records still exist in the local parishes etc.

If you wish to  continue to discuss your search I would welcome it

    Thankyou

    Noel.

  • hi Noel thanks for replying on the previous thread i should have asked you how far you have come on in the family, i was lucky on mine i still live in Workington  Cumbria were i could access my line and easily could get birth and marriage cert easily which took me to Edward who was a Master Mariner going between Ireland and Workington. I also found Edwards cert for Mates service issued in Workington in 1858 which gave his Birth and were he came from which was Drogheda County Louth. Edward married Mary Storey in Workington and had 3 children, the 1st one Anthony Died as a baby number 2 John is the line i come from and number 3 Birdget as just disappeared.   Mary ended up a poor soul and went into Asylum for menel health  ( got her records it makes hard reading )and John to live with his grandperants Birdget as i said disappeared and edward continued on the ships then i've lost him, think he went back and lived in dublin and thats all i know of my lot. in my research and reading different things about the Fannings i think there was 2 different families could be related way back. Hope when you go to Dublin you will find a lot off info. sorry i've rattled on but when i get going i don't know were to stop so hope to here from you soon and if you what you can email me at pmwilson49@gmail.com Pauline xxx
