Hi

I am looking for any info on Mary Kelly born c1854 in Dungooley, County Louth. I believe she married John McCann from Forkhill, Armagh c1874. She had a brother Bernard and possibly a sister Catherine who is named as witness to the marriage along with Peter McShane. Mary and John subsequently emigrated to the Gateshead area of Newcastle (together with Bernard?) where the descendants still live.

Would love to know more. Was it normal for families across the border to marry (both were Catholic)?

Thanks, Nicky

I know Elwyn responded to your other message. I checked Roots ireland www.rootsireland.ie and found an 1854 baptismal record for a Mary Kelly in the Faughart RC church. The fathers name was Edward and the mother was Bridget.

There is also an 1874 marriage record for Mary and John McCann in the same church. For some reason there is no civil record for the marriage.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record and they now require that you obtain a subscription.

I also looked at the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Faughart civil parish. There was an Edward Kelly listed in Dungooly.

  • Hi Elwyn

Thanks for your prompt reply and information. The Forkhill info came from an enquiry by my husband's aunt to Armagh Ancestry some while ago. We think/know John came from Armagh from subsequent census entries. They came back with 13 possible entries for his baptism of which the most likely is an entry from the Forkhill Catholic Parish Registers. Others were from Derrynoose, Shankhill, Upper Killeavy, Ballymore, Ballymacnab, Drumcree & Armagh. It is a guess but Forkhill is very close to Dungooly so it seemed the most likely way Mary and John may have met so it is the one I am pusuing for the moment.

Entry transcript reads 17/4/1851 John. Father: John McCann Mother: Mary McCann. Sponsors: Cornelius Rafferty Bridget McNeill

Will the actual certificate give me any more info do you know? I will certainly order it if so and/or if it turns out to be the correct one.

I found the marriage on rootsireland. It is the only one I can find for the two names within the date range and certainly fits with the info I hold on Mary which states Dungooly on one of the census returns as her place of birth. I have the Church Marriage record as follows:

Date of Marriage: 10 Dec 1874

Parish / District: FAUGHART County: County Louth

    Husband: John McCann

    Address: BLANK

    Denomination: Roman Catholic

    Occupation: BLANK

    Husband's Mother:

    Wife's Mother

    (all fields blank)

It is very frustrating that so many of the fields are blank!

Any further help or advice you may be able to give would be very gratefully received.

    Thank you again, Nicky

  • Hi Roger

Thank you so much for your reply. You will see that I have replied to Elwyn with the data I hold and he has replied. I will write as he suggests to see if a civil marriage record can be found.

I am very grateful for the information you have found re: Mary's possible baptism. Her date of birth is based on the subsequent census returns. Did you notice other Marys in adjacent years at all? I will have a look on rootsireland. I also thought I could look for a Bernard as we know Mary had a brother Bernard and if I can a record for him in the same parish with the same parents that should indicate a likely match.

The Griffiths Valuation records are fascinating. I did not know about them before as Ireland is new territory for me. I did a search for Dungooly and there are 5 Kellys listed. The main one appears to be Felix who is listed as leasing land from John Murphy. It looks like he is living with 3 other Kellys (possible sons as his land area/value is much greater than theirs?). A separate listing puts Edward Kelly leasing from Felix (so I guess Felix was subletting?). I'll have a proper look at the map and see if I can get a better idea of where they all lived.

Thank you again for your help/advice - much appreciated

    Nicky
