My great grandfather's name is James Mathews. He came to the United States in the 1880's. I found his marriage certificate and the parents' names on it indicated that his father was John Mathews and his mother was Bridget ( but there was not a maiden name. I have found some records on rootsireland.com that show a James Mathews born to John Mathews and Bridget Finegan was baptised on January 24 1868 in the Haggardstown Parish in Co. Louth. Ancestry.com had a record of James Mathews being born to John Mathews and Bridget Finigan on Feb 27 1868 in Dundalk, Louth Ireland and christened at 840, Dundalk, Louth, Ireland. I am wondering if there might be any information on these people as I think they are the connection to Ireland that I am looking for. I would so appreciate any help I can have on finding more information. Thanks so much.

In the meantime, have you tried looking into James? emigration? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure so you may be lucky and find something in his immigration records, and maybe even a specific place of origin.
