My grandparents, Charles Duffy and Margaret Hanratty, were married August 19,1847.  The marriage certificate reads:  Parish/District:  Haggardstown and Margaret's address is listed as B Barrack.  Does anyone know what parish they may have been married in?

  • Hi there,

Haggardstown is the parish. Please post your query here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/haggardstown-louth

It is possible that the B Barrack refers to a workhouse or hospital. There were a number of workhouses in County Louth. One in Ardee and one in Drogheda: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Ardee/ and  http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Drogheda/. There another in Dundalk.

There is a useful website you could also take a look at: http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • I guess I'm not use to parishes without saint's names. Thank you so much for your help.

  • Dear Carol,

there is a townland called Ballybarrack in the CIVIL parish (they re often different to  the Catholic or C of I parish) of Ballybarrack in Louth. Perhaps BBarrack is an abbrieviation of this?

Dundalk workhouse is  listed as being in this parish in the Griffiths Valuation  http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml .

    Regards
