Patrick MARKEY and Bridget KENNEDY were my ggg grandparents. I am looking for any further information of their lives in Ireland pre 1853.  **I don't know what Parish they were from.  I have searched records and found a few Markey's but nothing concrete yet to link any parent/brothers/sisters together or to a Parish. The Griffith's Valuation have 2 Patrick Markeys (Drumcar & Kildemock) but records are dated 1854 and they had already left for Australia in 1853. If anyone can help me I would be extremely grateful.  It is a dream of mine to visit Ireland one day and see the area that they lived in and/or contact any relatives of possible family eg brother/sisters that were left behind.

I am hoping to find their marriage or christening details that might give me family leads...

Patrick Markey & Bridget Kennedy they were married c1841 - Protestant

Their Children:

Bernard Bryan Markey, born c1841

Mary Markey, born c1844

Catherine Mary Markey, born c1850

They were Farm Labourers, quite poor I would assume so probably didn't own lands, probably tenants.

Guessing by family naming practices (as both daughter's have a "Mary") & a Catherine could have been Bridget's mother's name?  Also the name Bernard & Bryan is repeated so this could have been a father?

In Australia, 2 of the 3 children had children and names used are: Bernard, Catharine, Charlotte, Mary, John, Robert, Patrick & Alice, Letitia & Margaret.

**I only know they were from LOUTH as that information was on the ship's register when they arrived in Tasmania, Australia as assisted immigrants - see this below info:

Family sailed from Liverpool, London to Australia on the ship "Panama" on 8 January 1853  as "Assisted Immigrants to Tasmania 1841-1889". The Panama arrived at the Port of Hobart Town, Tasmania on 27 April 1853. The Ship's Nominal Register of Immigrants' Arrivals shows:
Patrick Markey, 36, Farm Labourer & Herdsman, Protestants from Co. Louth, Ireland
Bridget Markey, 32, Dairymaid & Washerwoman, do
Bernard Markey, 12, Farmboy, do
Mary, 9, child, do
Catherine, 1, infant, do

I have found a great deal of information on their lives in Tasmania and have visited those places.

    Hope you barrack for the Wallabies now!

    There was no record of the marriage of Patrick and Bridget on www.rootsireland.ie/

    There was 1 record o f the birth of Bernard - 1840 in Meath with parents Patrick & Bridget, but no record of Mary or Catherine.

    However, the news gets better: there is a record of the birth of Patrick Markey in Louth in 1816 (correct since the arrival was January and he had not had a birthday that year 1853 - 36 = born 1816.

    I went through the parishes and found that the parish of his birth was MONASTERBOICE R C so they must have converted at some stage..

    Unfortunately there was no record of Bridget Kennedy born arond 1820 in Louth.

    There is a charge to view the full record on rootsireland but it will give you his parents' names.

    The Tithe Applotments 1823-37 which are free to search has lots of Markeys in Louth but none in Monasterboice.

    I will check on that birth record thank you.

    Maybe Bridget and/or her family came from Meath especially if Bernard was born there. They could have married there too. Who knows!

  • Hello.  I am from the Markey family born in the USA as Amy Susan Markey, to my father, John Donald Gregory Kane Markey. I have just recently gone through my father's papers since he passed away several years ago, and found a very extensive family tree of the Markey name.  I also found and a letter and map, which I am attaching here, which has the Markey's marked in Louth.  My Grandfather, also John Donald Smithson Markey and Grandmother, Patricia Knee Markey had kept very good records of the Markey family, so I hope these might have some meaning or relationship to you.  I plan to get a copy of the family tree, so if any of this seems helpful, please let me know and I will get a copy of it too.  I am not sure how long I will be using irelandxo.com, so just in case, my email address is amyswhitney@gmail.com.
