My g-grandfather was James Condra, born about 1835 in Termonfeckin, County Louth, to James Condra and Margaret Lyon (Lyons?). He married Anne Fitzgerald O'Brien in Cass County, Indiana, USA, about 1865. I visited Ireland in 2005 and met Fr. Sean Quinn in Termonfeckin. He had some records of the Condra-Lyon family and it appears that my g-gfr James emigrated to the US before 1860. After his marriage Anne Francis O'Brien they moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and finally Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1897. His wife died in 1906.

I would love to know anything about this Condra family. My paternal grandmother was Margaret Jeanette Condra, born 1870 in Royal Center, Cass County, Indiana, USA. I know that her father (James, born about 1835) was probably the last child of parents James Condra and Margaret Lyons. Their daughter Ann (born about 1834) married a man named Patrick Mulvihill and lived in Ontario County, Canada.

Another sibling, Elizabeth or Beth or other diminutive, arrived in the Baltimore MD area. I believe she was born about 1821. I have been unable to learn anything about her.

Mary Condra, born about Dec. 1823, lived in Waterloo, Seneca County, New York, USA.

As always, I am looking for information and hopefully photographs. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi Sarah

I am the volunteer for Drogheda about 5 miles from Termonfeckin and I do not think there is a volunteer currently in Termonfeckin.

However Termonfeckin now have their own history website and you could try a message there. See http://www.termonfeckinhistory.ie/ It gives 2 Condra names from registers in early 1800s and one associated with a townland. There are no Lyon (s) hits. Also some photos.

There are a number of Condra's in Drogheda, see for phone book, https://www.eirphonebook.ie/# No Condras returned in Termonfeckin and 3 in Drogheda, remember that mobile phones have reduced the number of landlines.

A site for Louth is here http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ references to JCLAHS is the Journal of County Louth Archaeology and History Society and should be available in the Libray in Drogheda and Dundalk see http://www.louthcoco.ie/en/Services/Library/

I will ask some locals I know to see if I can glean any more info for you.

I came across a story about two years ago online about about an American WW 2 bomber I think, did or survived something remarkable but the list of 5 onboard included a Condra, stuck in my mind as I meet a lady by that name socially on occassion and hopefully I will bump into her again shortly and see if I can get more info. You can mail me at stpeters@irelandxo.com if you wish as if I locate things about living people I do not put it online but at the moment I have nothing of note.

    Regards
    Pat
