Looking for information on Martin Hewson. I do not know what county. Also information on Patrick, John or Brigid Floody from County Louth. And any information on John Waters from County Sligo.

Can you provide years of birth for Martin Hewson or the Floddys or John Waters so that one of our volunteers may try to assist you?

There were 35 Floodys in the 1911 census for Co. Louth.

  • Thanks for contacting me.  Here goes:

Martin Hewson was born in Ireland (I don't know where) about 1858 and emigrated to NYC in 1882.  He maried Mary Harris from Limerick.  I would like to know his county, parish, parents and siblings.

John Waters was born in Sligo on June 24, 1878 or 1879 (according to his US military records).  His obituary mentions Montaugh, Sligo but I cannot find this place.  I would like to know about his parents and siblings.  He married Julia Wheeler and died in NYC on January 10, 1947.

I am trying to find a connection between the Floody and Wogan families, specifically Patrick Floody of Beaulieu parish born in 1713 and died on July 1, 1770 and his daughter, Bridget Floody who was born in 1749 and died on the 29th July 1770.  This information was gatered from a grave marker in Termonfeckin parish under the name of John Floody.  Richard Wogan of Cartown who died on December 2, 1875 is also mentioned on the grave.

    Thank you.

John Waters likely came from Montiagh townland in Achonry civil parish. I looked for civil birth index records and found one in 1878. The birth was registered in the Tobercurrry registration which includes Achonry civil parish. One thing to note, the birth was registered in the first quarter of 1878 which does not match the June 24th date of birth in your message. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you plan to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

Martin Hewson was born before civil registration started. I did check Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  They did not have any church records in 1858 for a Martin Hewson, however, there was an 1857 baptism record for a Martin Hewson in Co. Limerick. No idea if this is the Martin you are looking for. Roots is a pay site to look at the data transcribed from the church record.

I can't assist you on the Floody family.

  • Roger,

Thank you for your assistance.  I would like to get a copy of John Waters' birth certificate.  Please be aware that I am a resident of the United States.  Your directive would be most welcomed.

I live in the States also. The instructions are below. It is a fairly simple process. You mail the request to the GRO and ask them to e-mail the record back. I provide my credit card number. I have done this more than 20 times with no issues and you should get the record back in two weeks.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Roger,

I downloaded the link above as directed and attempted to fill in the information.  However, it is indicated in the required fields that I must enter John's mother's maiden name and the address/place of birth (hospital or home).  I don't have this information and this is the reason why I wish to obtain the certificate.  The link indicates that if this information is not entered, the form may be returned.  Do you have any advice?

    Many thanks,

    Pat Davis

Just enter "unknown" in those two fields. Many people who request copies of records do not have information on the person they are requestin a record.
