My father was Lawrence Kilbane born in Saula 1919, son of James Kilbane and Mary Gallagher (from Cashell).  My Great Grandparents were Patrick Kilbane & Mary Davitt, Michael Gallagher & Bridget Cafferky.

From the 1911 census my father had a brother Michael 1908c.  He also had a brother James 1911-1968 married to Mary Gallagher, they has a son James Brendan Kilbane 1950-1998.  There are pictures of James Brendan in the centinary book of Saula School.  I would think my father had other siblings.

Also from the census my Grandfather James Kilbane has a sister Mary.  My Grandmother Mary Gallagher siblings were Ann, Michael and Bridget.  I have been unable to verify who their siblings married as there are so many with the same name.

I did not know my father very well but I would love to find out more about this side of my family.  I would appreciate any help please.

Many thanks

Bridget

  • Hi Bridget,

I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie/ for the Kilbanes and Gallaghers.

I searched in Mayo only for baptisms/births of Gallagher with no first name & no year specified parents Michael Gallagher and Bridget Cafferky and got 9 matches.

A similar search for the Kilbanes got no matches even when all counties were included!

I did get the marriage of James & Mary though - 1907 in Mayo - parish Achill R C.

rootsireland is a pay site but you might like to buy a bit of credit on the site and have a look for your family there.

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for your help,  I have paid to look at some marriage records on rootsireland site.  I will have to see where that leads me.

  • Good luck with it Bridget.

My great grandfather Patrick Cafferky was from Keel, Achill. Married Honor McHale in 1856.

All I can find is that his father was also Patrick and that he had a brother John.

They were Church of Ireland - probably converts.

It is a rare surname in Australia but there are lots in Achill.

Achill is a beautiful place - well worth a visit!
