I am seeking information on KELLY/GIBBONS in Knockroosky, Mace. Specifically I am interested in (1)John KELLY and parents, siblings, etc. John was born in 1838 in Knockroosky. I think, but am not certain his parents were John KELLY and Mary MURRY(?)

(2)Catherine GIBBONS likely born in Mace between 1838 -50. She was the daughter of Thomas GIBBONS and Mary WALSH. She had the following known siblings: Thomas (d 1938, Mace), Richard, Walter, William and Patrick.

John and Catherine likely would have been married in 1863-1867, possibly earlier. (They are my gg-grandparents) They had two children born in Knockroosky: Mary 3 Nov 1867 and Bridget born 29 Sep 1868 (she is my g-grandmother). They emigrated to Luzerne County, PA, USA, soon after Bridget's birth.

If you have any info please respond to this post or e-mail me directly at jerrykelley@comcast.net

Below is the likely the civil marriage index record for the John Kelly/Catherine Gibbons marriage, You can get a copy of the record for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1867. If you plan to get a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland has an 1838 baptismal record for a John Kelly with John Kelly and Mary Murray. However, the record is not in the Aghagower RC records. I didn't go parish by parish to determine where the record was located. There are four other children born to this couple in the period 1828-1848. Roots is a pay site to view transcriptions of church records.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I would like to get a copy of the record of John and Catherine's marriage. I saw a baptismal record on John KELLY, b 1838, listing John parent's as John KELLY and Mary MURR(A)Y with Pat and Catherine KELLY as sponsors. If it is not too much, I would like to get the info on his siblings as I believe they emigrated to the US and settled in Kingston, Luzerne County, PA but haven't been able to document.

You seem quite knowledgeable on this. I am also seeking information on Patrick KELLY and Mary FLANNELLY/FLANNERY. They are another set of gg-grandparents. I believe they were born abt 1822 and 1835 respectively, but wo knows. I know they thad a daughter Mary, b. 23 Mar 1864 in Belderg More (?). Her sister and my g-grandmother, Bridget, was born in Apr 1863, and her brother Thomas Francis in 1862. I believe but am not certain they too were born in Belderg More(?). As I recall, the towland is in the parish of Doonfeeny or Killala and there are no records for the period I seek. I did find some info in Griffiths but nothing of much help.

    Thank you for your help!

    Regards, Jerry Kelley

Instructions for getting a copy of a record from the General Register Office are below.

Regarding the siblings of John Kelly, you would need to register on Roots and search the indexes to find the baptismal index records for the other four siblings of John Kelly and Mary Murray. Once you find them, you need to pay to see the transcription of each church record.

I looked for Patrick Kelly and Mary Flannelly/Flannery. From Roots it appears her surname is Flannelly. There is a civil birth record for Mary parents Patrick Kelly and Mary Flannelly in 1864.

When I went to the birth index records for the Killala registration district, I found that there were 3 Mary Kellys born in 1864 in the Killala district as follows: Volume 9 page 357, Volume 14 page 348 and Volume 9 page 354. If you write to the GRO, give them the 3 sets of index records and tell them you want the Mary whose parents are Patrick and Mary Flannelly.

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Roger,

If I elect to buy credit at Roots, can I print as well as view the record?

    Thanks, Jerry

I believe you can print ( I have never had to use Roots for a record). E-mail them at enquiries@rootsireland.ie to confirm.
