I am searching for Michael O'Dowd born around 1848...in the Valuation of Tenements there are a number of O'Dowd's that match the first name children of Michael O'Dowd...I'm think Michael can from the parish of Attymass to America around 1870...he married Winifred Cummings...any help verifing Michael would be great!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Do you have Michael's death record and does it provide information regarding the names of his parents? Attymass RC records do not begin until 1874-1875 so no help there. There were ten times more Dowds than O'Dowds in Ireland in the mid-19th century and Mayo sis not have many Dowds. Did you have other evidence to pinpoint Attymass parish or did you compare the O'Dowds in the Griffiths?

Autosomal DNA testing may be another option.

  • Roger, thanks for the quick response, Regarding DNA testing, I did the DNA test from Ancestry http://dna.ancestry.com/public/ethnicity/eafc7831-03d8-4cca-9aaf-1a0c5b…

Michael O'Dowd has been very elusive, I don't have a death certificate, mostly working off of Census records and my dad said the O'Dowd family came from County Mayo...I have a 1900 census record that has Michael's Birth as June 1845 or it could be 1848...The reason I was thinking Attymass, this is the only place in Ireland that I found contains the first names of Michael's children in the US....
