My name is Thomas Carroll Keefe. My mother's name was Margaret Louise Hughes whose father was Edward (Ned) Hughes. He was born in 1874 in Scardaun (I believe Corraghadoey).  His parents were Stephen Hughes and Catherine Kerrane. He came to USA in 1892 and lived in South Natick Ma. He married Mary Killeen she was also from Scardaun. In their marriage certificate they listed her parents names as James Killeen and Catherine Jordan. There is no birth record of Mary from James Killeen and Catherine but there was a Bridget born to them in 2 August 1874. Could she of changed her name from Bridget to Mary? She came to the USA in 1898. There was a James Kelly and Catherine Jordan in the same civil district who had a daughter by the name of Mary born in 26 July 1874 Could Mary Kelly actually be Mary Killeen?

My grandfather's brother Stephen lived in Corraghadoey aned married an Ellen Brady in 1899.  If you have any information about my family could you please let me know. I also have my Irish citizenship through my grandfather Edward. We recently were in Ireland and visited Scardaun(Corraghadoey) but couldn't find anyone home.  My email address pfld@comcast.net.  Thank You Tom Keefe

I went to www.familysearch.org and looked for baptismal and birth records.I found a baptismal index record for Ned. It appears he was born in September 1873. Also, found a baptismal index record for Stephen born April 1, 1867 and Michael June 12 ,1870. I also found the civil birth index record for Ned . It was registered in 1873 in the Claremorris registration district, volume 19, page 159. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy of the birth record. Fill out their form and provide the year of birth, Claremorris and the volume and page number. Costs around 4 euros. I looked in the 1901 census records for Curraghadooey and although there were many Hughes families, I only found one Stephen and he did not appear to be your grandfather's brother.

  • Roger,

Thank you very much for your reply to the Hughes family mysteries. I have a document of a marriage record of Stephen Hughes marrying Ellen Brady 11 Feb. 1899. This document came from Crossboyne and Tagheen RC register 4 page 22. In there it states his parents as being Stephen Hughes and Kate Hughes (Kate Kirran) making him a brother to Edward ( Ned) my Grandfather. You looked in the 1901 census and he moved to USA in 1899 on a Ship the Majestic. Ellen Brady was born in USA and we don't understand how this marriage took place in Ireland. I do have other documents stating Stephen, Michael  and Edward as  being brothers.

Of course the Killeen mystery is still ongoing. May never be solved. Any other information you may have would be appreciated.

I'm guessing that Ellen's parents had emigrated but then her grandfather died and the family went back to Ireland to run the farm. I have seen this situation quite a few times in reviewing census records. see my web site. www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census
