Hello.  My wife and I are searching for information that would lead us to be able to obtain the birth certificate of her grandfather, Frank O'Boyle (possibly born Francis).  From mixed records, we believe he was born between 1874 and 1876.  We know that his father's name was Michael O'Boyle, and believe he could have been born in Deel Bridge, Ireland.  His mother was born Catherine Gill, in Rathmore, Ireland.

He had siblings with the names of: Annie, James, Michael, Thomas, Robert J., and Patrick J. [1882-1926]

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

O'Boyle

  • Anne-Marie!  Thanks you SO much!  So many questions as the birthdate is slightly off, but the siblings match exactly and the parents names are exactly what were listed on his death certificare.  Was it common for people born with the name Francis to go by Frank?

Would you possibly have any additional information about Frank/Francis' marriage, when he left Crossmolina, or anything else?

    Go raibh maith agat!

  • Anne-Marie,

Is there any way for you to tell if the birth was registered?  The website says not to apply if it hasn't.

    Thanks!

    Ken

  • Hi again,

It is still very common that someone named Francis is called Frank even now.

Yes the birth is registered as civil registration was already in place in 1874, so you should be able to get a birth certificate

I will have a look to see if I can find a marriage, did Francis emigrate? then for the year of emigration we will need to look at arrival/passenger records in his adopted country, where did Francis go. where did he settle

  • Ken, if I am correct Francis married a girl from Missouri named Ellen Minerva Faulkner so the marriage did not take place in Ireland. Francis  and  Ellen had a son Richard Faulkner O'Boyle born 16 Jun 1923 in Chicago

Just need to find an emigration record now

  • Anne-Marie,

Yes, that emigration and marriage information matches ours.  In addition to the son, Richard, he had a daughter with Ellen Faulkner O'Boyle, named Nora Edith, born on 20 Jun 1921.  This is my wife's (Elizabeth Ellen) mother.

Frank had moved at some point to Edinburgh, Scotland, where he married and had four (possibly 5?) children in Edinburgh, two of whom we know (Thomas [born 2 May 1901] and Kathleen [born 15 Jun 1903 ) emigrated to the USA (Chicago).  Nora had contact with these half-siblings for a number of years.  Our understanding is that his first wife was committed to an institution and his marriage annulled, although we have not been able to substantiate any of that.  We would love to get more information about this.

Frank was living in Edinburgh when he imigrated to the USA.  We have a long journal he wrote while on the ship.
