Greetings from the Chicago,IL area!

Researching both of my Grandparents families from Mayo. In this parish I am researching my Grandmother's line, the Harringtons.

My Grandmother, Winifred HARRINGTON: born I Oct 1888 emigrated to Chicago in 1907; married my Grandfather John Joyce from Liscarney in 1911 in Chicago and died in Chicago in 1970.  I have all documents relative to her and some  information of her siblings:  Mary b-1871; Michael b-1872/d-1893; Catherine b-1874; Bridget b-1876; Patrick b-1879; Margaret b-1881; Ellen b-1885; Anne b-1893.  My records show that all of this generation emigrated to Chicago other than Michael who died at age 20 in Hagfield and the youngest child Annie who I believe died at age 18 in Hagfield.

Winifred's parents ( my Great Grandparents) were Thomas HARRINGTON and Margaret GRADY(O'Grady) who were married in June 1870.   I have no birth or death info for them  I do know that Thomas had siblings Mary (who married John MAYE in 1866); Catherine (who married Martin LUNDY in 1888); James (who married Mary DEVINE in 1881)  I have no information on Margaret GRADY's siblings.

My Great Grandfather Thomas's parents (my Great Great Grandparents) were Michael Harrington b-1811 and Catherine??? who married sometime in the early 1840s

My Great Grandmother Margaret's parents (my Great Great Grandparents) were Patrick Grady(O'Grady) and ???..

Since it appears all of my Grandmother Winifred HARRINGTON's siblings either died at an early age in Ireland, or emigrated to Chicago, I guess that immediate Irish familial line ends there. However I would still be interested in the GRADY side as well as the children from my Great Grandfathers siblings which would include, MAYE, LUNDY, DEVINE connections.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I will alert our parish liaison for Kilbeagh parish that you have posted a message. I did look for civil death records for Thomas, Margaret and Anne. I located a likely record for Thomas and the likely record for Anne. You can get copies of these records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. If you need instructions let me know.

  • Thank you Roger. You have helped me in the past with the Joyce/Keane side of my family from Aghagower Parish. You've sent me instructions on how to order records from theGeneral Register Office so I will follow those instructions for this side of my Mayo family also.

  • Hi

just came across this thread.  My paternal line is from Carracastle/Charlestown and I have Grady, Harrington and Maye in my tree.

The details for the Margaret Grady I have are:

    Margaret Grady

BIRTH 5 JAN 1893 • Fauleens, Kilbeagh, Mayo, Ireland. DEATH 29 JUNE 1970 • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I have her marrying a John Francis Harrington in Phiilidelphia in 1918.

I know these names are very common in thie region, but does this look like a likely match at all?

If so please feel free to message me here or better still by email at mike@gallagher.org.uk.  I'd be happy to share what I have.

  • Actually, having just re-read you posting it doesn't look likely does it!  However, if you'd like to see what I have I can share on Ancestry.

  • Hi Mike,

Great to hear from you.  I was thrilled to see your response as we have so many names in common.  I have very little information on my Margaret Grady, who I'm guessing was born in the 1840s.  But then I thought, well, perhaps your Margaret Grady was the daughter or grand daughter of a sibling to my Margaret Grady.  There is some information I have that shows my Margaret Grady had a daughter Mary who emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, married a Patrick Ryan, had several children in Pittsburgh, and eventually settled in Chicago, IL.

I would be very interested in seeing your Ancestry information so I will e-mail you and also share with you, my Ancestry tree information.

Thanks so much for contacting me and have a wonderful and Merry Christmas.

  • This maybe of no help. however we all know every this piece of info might open a new door. My paternal garandmother was Kate Grady , born in Hagfield Mar 14 1889, her first husband was John Gallagher who died in Hagfield May 27, 1927, they had 5 children, tow of which James and Tom married Harrington sisters in Chicago , Mary Ann and Liz.  Kate later married Michael Corley , my grandfather, Kate died in Chicago in April 28, 1965 she also had a brother Michael passed in 1962 and is bured in Bushfiled and a sister Bridget, I'm not sure if Bridget passed in Philly or Chicago. Kates parentd were Patrick and Catherine ,nee Duffy.    Hope this might help ---let me know , my email is wjccjw@sbcglobal.net and I will share what I have. I also post pictures on facebook in the Heritage Charlestown group        Bill Corley
