My Great Grandmother, Anna Murphy, was born around 1873 and immigrated in 1888 to New York.  In 1926, she tried to find out what happened to her family money.  I have a letter from the consular's office that says her mother died in Sept 1916 and Anna's sister, Mrs. Patrick Murphy, gave the home to the Congested Districts Board in exchange for a place in Turin, Kilbeagh, Mayo.  I am having a hard time with the correct spelling of Corthoon in the census and the Griffiths Index.  Can any one point me in the right direction?

HI I live only 2 miles from Corthoon . In Griffiths Valuation 1856 it is spelt  Cartron. & there are no Murphys living there

    I have also checked the 1901 & 1911 census & no Murphys .

I can not find Anna Murphy in  Church records for 1873  .

Is  Murphy her maiden name or her married name.

  • Thank you Seamus! Come to find out the letter we have from the consulates office says Corthoon, but they were actually from Cartron (Kirwin) in County Mayo. I have found the family there in the Census records. By the time the census had been taken, my great grandmother had already immigrated to the US. My sister was in Ireland and was able to find Anne's birth certificate. I believe her parents are William Murphy and Bridget tigue. Anne was baptized at kilmaine RC parish. Is that any where close to you?
