James is my great grandfather, born in the early 1870's, emigrated to New Yok City area in the 1890's.  I had a note that he was from the Parish of Cahala, County Mayo, which may be a mistranscribed Parish Killala.  I'm trying to find birth or other records for him or his family.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  A picture, presumed to be about the time of his wedding in the mid to late 1890's in NYC is attached.

Any help in finding information is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Mike,

I looked on www.rootsireland.ie for James Murphy born around 1870 +- 5 years in Co Mayo.  This brought up 62 records.  As you will appreciate the name Murphy is quite common here so we would need a little more information in order to pinpoint the correct family.  We really would need a parents name.

As the timeframe is recent there should be records to access this information.  I would suggest that you apply to birth marriage and death records office for New York and get his marriage certificate.  This will yield much information.  You may need to go back step by step through your parent's and grandparents certificates in order to get the correct information.

We would love to be able to help you trace your ancestor over here but we need a certain level of information.  If we could have his parent's names it would make things simple.  Have you looked in the local library in the district where he died to see if there is mention of him in an obituary?  It's amazing the amount of information contained in these.

Please get back to us when you have a bit more information that we can go on.

Look forward to hearing from you soon,

    Kind regards,

  • Anne, Thank you so much!

I tried pulling the marriage certificate from the State of New York.  The number of same names listed in the general time period was overwhelming and confusing.  I have an approximate date of death (1923) for James so I will look in that direction next.  I know the Irish side of the family owned a bit of property as the Irish branch had the NY branch sign off on a transfer of ownership some time in the 1980's.  Apparently the title was clouded.  I have the death certificates for both my father and grandfather.  I will inspect them again for clues.

I look forward to having some info for you the next time.

    Warmest regards,

    Mike
