  • Hi Col,

Killala was a register city up to about 1898 for many parishes - Killala, Kilcummin, Lackan, Rathreagh, Kilfian, etc. She could of been from any of those parishes.

I searched on the Irish TIthes (Church Tax list that was taken from 1815 - 1842) for Brown, and found a group of Browne's living in Kilfian, see here (some of the records are duplications):

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=75&query=%2Bsu…

It looks like Window Browne, Anthony, Thomas lived in Kilfian. It could be that this Thomas was her father (note that FamilySearch says that the record was from 1815, but they are wrong, it is from 1832).

Funny enough, Thomas Browne was living next to John Loughney, who was probably a brother of my great great grandfather!

    Hope this helps,

    John Loughney

  • Hello- I'm following this thread, as I am also trying to connect an ancestor to Killala.  John- you mention that Killala was a "register city" for many parishes.  My ancestor's obituary said she was "from near Kilaloe, County Mayo"--  this is our only clue thus far beyond County Mayo, generally!  We took it to mean Killala... but we aren't sure if it means the town, the parish, etc..  We also don't know what "near" could indicate.  We have found a record, recently, that could be her father's military record-  which says he (if this is him) was born in Ballinrobe town.  This seems far from Killala....  Any insights or thoughts?

  • Ballinrobe is far from Killala. Kilaloe is a town in both Clare and in Limerick, so maybe there's some confusion.

Killala was a poor law center and civil register until about 1900, so birth / death / marriages were registered there.

Main parishes would be Killala, Kilcummin, Lacken, Kilfian, Rathreagh, Templemurry.Kilbride - you might want to look at this site for more information: http://goldenlangan.com/map.html

Would you be able to tell me the surname and the timeframe for who you are looking for?

    thanks,

    John

  • John-

We have a posting on this board about our ancestor.  Her name was Nancy Carney (Kearney) Rogan.   She was born in 1816, married James Rogan (b. 1810) (also of county Mayo) in 1838 and then they emigrated that same year to New York.  They had 3 kids in 7 years in New York. The 5 of them went to Ireland from 1845-1847 and then returned again to the US.  They settled in Wisconsin and she lived out her life there- having 5 more children.  She died in 1880 and we have her obituary that says "from Kilaloe, County Mayo".  All other family histories and documents say County Mayo for Nancy, her husband James Rogan, her father Patrick Carney and James' father Bartholomew Rogan.

Any insight or advice would be much appreciated!!  :)

    Thanks Anne & Pete Rogan
