Looking for ancestors of Eliza Jane Hampton born abt 1852, christened 8 Oct 1852,at Kilmore Parish Church, who emigrated to New Zealand 1873 with brother William John born 1856 and sister Caroline born 1858.  Eliza died in 1924 on her way back to Ireland to visit family.  I am told her parents were William Hampton 1823-1868 and Mary Rowntree born 1833.  Would like to know of other siblings and relatives who remained in Ireland. Any info gratefully received.  Thank you,

Elizajane

  • William Hampton married Margaret Jane Hampton on 12th December 1839.  Their son Seth was born 27th August 1846 [doesn't appear to be any other surviving children].  Margaret Jane died in approximately 1849.

William remarried - marrying Mary Rountree on 10th October 1851.  They had the following children:

Eliza Jane born 8th October 1852 and baptized 6th March 1853

Rebecca born 5th August 1854 and baptized 26th November 1854

William John born 12th February 1856 and baptized 15th March 1857

Caroline born 25th October 1858 and baptized 9th January 1859

Annabelle born 16th July 1861 and baptized September 1861, died in 1866 aged 5 years

Joseph born 3rd July 1863 and baptized 14th February 1864

Leonard born 11th March 1866 and baptized 30th April 1866, died in 1866 between 1 and 9 months old

Anne born in 1867 [no other details]

William died 28th January 1868.  His Will mentions William John and Joseph by name and his daughters who he unfortunately doesn't name.  He also leaves ?5 to his son Seth who he says now lives in Australia.

No further trace of Rebecca, Joseph or Anne so far [they don't appear to have stayed in Armagh but there is no evidence that they emigrated either]

One of the witnesses to William's second marriage was a David Hampton [possibly could be William's brother].  William's father was called 'Seth'.

  • You're welcome.

I'm attaching a copy of the transcript of William's Will which appears to have been written the day before he died.

  • Thank you - how exciting - that is so amazing to read and it answered a puzzle - I have always wondered why my grandfather (Eliza Hampton's son) had the second christian name of 'Redmond' - I could find it nowhere in the family, and now you have just solved the mystery.  Eliza used it again as a second christian name when she remarried and had further children.  Thank you so very much!

    Kind regards

  • I am also a great grand daughter of Eliza Jane Hampton. I am very interested in Eliza and her siblings and have researched the family in New Zealand. Can anyone advise how I purchase photocopies/printouts of these records of birth and baptism for Eliza and her siblings? That information would be of great assistance. Thank you.
