I have traced my hubands family back to Maria Julia Knox b1829 Ireland, died Pinner , England 1877.  She had a sister Jane Sarah Knox 1848-1905 and a brother James William Knox 1830-1857.  On her wedding certificate, 7/3/1848 at Ballina Mayo to John Halpin Thompson, her father is listed as Ansly Knox, Postmaster.  Her mother was I believe Eliza Hodges who married Annesley Knox in Kilmoremoy on 24/01/1819.

I have two problems!

1. Which Annesley Knox was her father?  All ancestry hints point to Rappa Castle but as I have found their family tree and she is not on it, I am stuck!!

2. Maria's husband was in the Revenue Police and later died on the Gold Coast, I can find no trace of his parents.

As we live in Australia, I would be most grateful for any hints/help!

Diolch am fawr! (as a twist, I'm Welsh)

  • Hello, nice to meet you. I assume that the Knoxes were Church of Ireland. Records are not so good for them.

    Church of Ireland

Kilmoremoy Parish Church served as the church for the union of Ardagh, county Mayo which includes also the vicarages of Attymass, Ballynahglish, Kilbelfad and Kilgarvan, the church built in 1763 was at Ardnaree, county Mayo.

Name(s) of ecclesiastical parish, records, availability, archive, online indexes, notes.

  • Hi

Many thanks for your quick reply!

I hadn't found the site you mentioned, I will look into that.  I'm guessing there were lots of Knoxes in and near Ballina in 1820 - 1860, any suggestions how I sort them out?!  Also was postmaster of Ballina in 1848 an important position or just another job?

Thanks again and g'day this time (it's 37C here today!)

  • Ill check more on this tonight.

You might want to start making a document of some of the families, they might be related.

  • The surname is definately Halpin and I have now seen an Irish Revenue Police memo that seems to say John Halpin Thompson is from leixlip, Kildare.  I dont know if the memo means he has just moved offices or is from leixlip.  i have posted a message on the Leixlip board.

I have documented all the knoxes of Mayo that I can find and I cant find an Annesley Knox who fathered a Maria Julia - still searching!

  • I also have some MCALPIN(E)s/CALPIN/  married to some of my MANLEY/MUNNELLY family in England.  I think the family was also in Scotland, some went to Canada, also to Maine, USA.  Spelling varies...all kinds of reasons why. Even priests made mistakes!
