My 3X Great Grandparents Austin Reilly(Rielly) (b: 1785, d: 1861) and Elizabeth Ormsby (b: 1800, d: 1895) were married 12 Dec 1824 in Oughaval RC Parish.  I have census records that indicate they had 10 children.  I have Identified 3 of them Ellen (b: 1825, d: 1905), Timothy (b: 1836, d: 1904) and Margaret (b: 1836, d: 1903).  Austin and Timothy arrived in the U.S. in October of 1849.  Elizabeth, Ellen and Margaret arrived around 1850. Most of the family ended up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, Timothy ended up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.  Austin, Elizabeth, Ellen (married James Galick) and Margaret (married Hugh McGuire) are all buried in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.  Timothy (married Katherine Gregg) is buried in St.Andrew's Catholic Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MIchigan, USA.  Buried in the same family plot as the Reilly (Rielly) and Galick families is the McGrail family (Miles b: 1826, d: 1871 and Maria b: 1833, d: 1872).  I have found no solid link between the Reilly, Galick and McGrail families other than they are all in the same cemetery plot and the plot marker has all 3 family names on it.  Austin and Timothy were both stone masons and farmers in the U.S.  I am descended from Timothy.  Any information (or research advise) on Austin and Elizabeth or their family would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

They only information I can provide is the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Oughaval parish. There were many Reillys listed a few Ormsby records and a good number of McGreal records which may be the connection to McGrail. No Galicks listed adn I don't think that would be an Irish surname. Baptismal records for Oughaval RC parish do not begin until 1845.

  • Roger,

Thank you for the link.  Unfortunately I do not have any other information on Austin Reilly's family in Ireland, there was a Charles Reilly who was a witness to the marriage, but I do not know his relationship Austin.  I believe that Elizabeth Ormsby's father was John Ormsby and Mile McGrails father was Martin.  Both a John Ormsby and a Martin McGreal appear on the Griffiths list you linked.

    Hello J. Reilly:

What little I know of these McGrail family is that Miles was the son of a Martin McGrail and Elizabeth Reilly both of whom I believe remained in Ireland. The form of the name for this McGrail group often changed to McGreil on some documentation (Census)

    Hello J. Reilly:

Unfortunately not. I did some work on the McGreal/McGrail names about three years ago but with the brevity of details in early records making relationships firm was somewhat difficult. There are still McGrail members of this line around to take it to the DNA level and one of the sons of Miles and Maria McGrail was Oswald Ormsby McGrail http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=19670960

Can I take it that Martin McGrail and Elizabeth Reilly who I referred to earlier are buried in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA .
