I am looking for birth or baptismal records for James J Moran, birth date I have is 12 April 1840. His parents were Martin and Mary, her maiden name may have been Moran also, unless she married before or they were married in the Church of Ireland first. I have a marriage date for them of January 1831 in Clonmonad, not sure of that spelling, which I believe is a townland close to Westport Quay in Oughaval. I know he had at least 1 brother Patrick who married a Catherine Ruddy(Reddy) they had 1 daughter that I know of, Mary Ann, who lived with James' family in St. Louis, MO. USA in 1880. I would appreciate any records, leads or information on any Morans in the area who could be related, thank you.                                   Jim Moran

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland from 1832-1848 and could not locate a James Moran baptismal record with parents Martin and Mary. Roots has Church of Ireland and RC records for Oughaval parish. I also looked for Patrick and there was an 1845 baptismal record in Oughaval RC church where the father was Martin but the mother was Margaret not Mary.If the family was not RC then this record is not correct.

The townland is spelled Cloonmonad and as you indicated it is located close to the Quay a little distance from the town center.

  • Thanks for your prompt research and reply. Almost certain they were RC and would be interested in Margaret's maiden name if you have it and I will see where it leads me, also any mention of sponsors could be helpful as well. I know Moran was a common name in the county at that time, but any information on Morans that might be siblings of Martin or possible relations. Thanks for anything you can give me.   Jim Moran

The record shows Margaret N. L. I'm wondering if she died at childbirth and the N. L. stands for not living? Based on the witnesses she could have been a Joyce or Walsh.

  • Hello again, I have been searching for records or information on my Irish ancestors, but have had little success. What I think I know I can not corroborate or disprove. I know my great grandmother Annie Droney came from Clare and married Patrick Begley from Cork, but can find no records on them or their children in Ireland. Annie and 4 of the children landed in NY in 1868, Patrick came over but do not know if it was before or after Annie. I also have another great grandmother Annie White who landed in the states in the 1870s and was from Tyrone, but I have not looked too much for her in Ireland and was probably COI and not RC. As for the Morans I have found several others from surrounding parishes in the Westport area and several 3rd and 4th cousins through Ancestry DNA, but can't find the common ancestor as no one has definitive records or information about siblings to their great and 2xgreat grandparents. Anyway, I am coming to Ireland in July and should be in Mayo on the 26th and was hoping to have a plan for searching for information while I am there. Any thing you can do to help would be greatly appreciated, thank you,                          Jim Moran

Here is a link to the Mayo Library site. The main library is in Castlebar but I'm sure the Westport branch would have a lot of resources. Have a great trip! By the way, I looked for a Anne Droney/Patrick Begley marriage record with no success. You rnote reads like Anne was widowed in Ireland and emigrated and married Patrick.
