My maternal grandparents came from the Murrisk and Kilgeever areas between Westport & Louisburgh.  My O'Malley lived in Kilsallagh since before 1850 and Kinnock since 1883.  The male side, Michael O'Malley born approx 1805 married Mary Gannon; had 3 sons: Michael 1825-1919; Patrick 1847-1903; Martin no dates.

Michael married in 1853 to Catherine Duffy 1830-1906 and had 8 children--my grandmother Bridget (Delia) O'Malley was 7th child and only one of her generation to emigrate.  I've been blessed to meet some of my cousins from the "Michael-Mike line".

Grady family begins with Simon Grady 1839-1906 married Honor Gannon 1839-1911 approx 1860.  Not sure where they were married--or if born in the Louisburgh area.  They had five children, some of whom were baptized in Kilgeever RC parish:  Mary 1861-1936; Tomas 1866-1916; Martin, my grandfather, 1868-1918-married Bridget O'Malley in US; Bridget 1871-1930+.  No record for son Austin 1863-1908.

I'm looking for any info on thiese families except the Michael-Mike line.

  • Hi Kathleen,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Census information is available from http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ . Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm  . Information regarding County Mayo family history is available for a fee from http://mayo.rootsireland.ie/ .

There is also a  Facebook Group - "Mayo Genealogy Group" that may be able to help you with your search.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • My maternal great grandparents were from the same area.  There are MALLEYS and GRADYS as  sponsors for my family there which may or may not be part of your family.

My 2nd great grandfather was Michael GERAGHTY, born 1846 in Oughaval parish (probably Lecanvey or surrounds) to Michael GERAGHTY and Mary HYNES.  His godparents were Patrick RUDDY and Bridget "GREADY".  He married Mary BURNS, 24 Feb 1870 in Oughaval Parish, proabably Lecanvey, and their sponsors were John MORTIMER and Marianne or Margaret MALLEY.  So theres some close connection to the Gradys and Malleys here.

On the Griffiths, for Kilsallagh Lower, there is listed together Grady and Gannon for #16., I see a Michael Malley and a few Duffys for Kilsallagh Upper, along with a William Grady and a Patrick Grady, theres also an Owen Cannon but that could be Gannon if your Gannons were from there.  I looked on mayoancestors.com and I did find a birth for an Honora Gannon, for 1838  to a J. G. (J. Gannon) and a J. O'D (probably O'Donnell).  If you pay on that site they will give you the full transcription.  I have had a lot of luck with that site taking me back another generation on my tree for the same area.    On the Griffiths theres a John O'Donnell listed for Glenbaun but I didn't go thru the Griffiths further than that.

    Hope this helps
