My wife and I will be visiting Turlough in June of this year.  We hope to find out where my great great great grandfather and family with eight children lived prior to leaving for Canada in 1822.  His name was John Riddle (some may spell it Riddell) and his wife was Ann Ewen.  I suspect there are relatives buried in the area.  Most of the family moved to Canada.  They were protestants of the Church of Scotland having moved from Scotland 3 generations earlier, i.e., John's grandfather appears to have been born in Scotland.

  • Hi there

I live near Turlough, I am not a native but am familiar with the townlands surrounding.

I see in the Griffiths Valuations, 1850's there is a George Riddle living in Park, which is adjacent to Turlough, you can check the Maps to find out exactly where the homestead is.

There are a few trees on Ancestry, they might be this one, as there is a George Dying in Canada, this might be the same George living in Park, in the 1850

I notice on the Griffiths Valuations that there is a landholder, Bridget Irwin,  but havn't come across Ewin in Mayo.

I have searched the Tithe Applotments 1823-37, but could not find ether name, you could have a look through this yourself.

  • Just wanted to add to above that this is an excellent website for Canada, if you wanted to search the emigration records, census etc., for your Irish Riddle's.

  • Hello Dympna

The above archive site you mention I had not seen before.  It took me right to J(ane) Isabella (Ritchie) Riddle (and spelled Riddle).  I would like to know more but it is clearly my great great grandmother.

    Thank you

I found this link for Ontario off the Main Canadian Government website, it might be worthwhile exploring, they say they have access to Certificates from 70 to 95 years depending on the Event (B/M/D)

    You might find something there.

  • Hello, I'm also a descendant of George and Jane. Something to be careful of: there are two George and Jane's and the Georges were born months apart and died months apart, both living in Canada. George Riddle that is my ancestor was married to Jane Gerow. He was from Ireland and I've never found any documents on him in Ireland. The other George has a wife named Isabelle or sometimes Jane Isabell and they're from Scotland. Another thing that is very confusing about these two families is that they have a daughter named Isabelle or Isabella with different birth year, an Archibald with a different birth year and a James if I remember correctly. My grandmother was Louisa Riddle. Jane Gerow and George Riddle (irish) oldest daughter. If you have found any info on the Irish couple, please let me know. I can also help you with Isabella and George's Scottish supporting documents. There are a lot. The George Riddle that I see in thurlough was there long after my Irish ancestor came to Canada. Not the same guy. Lots of paper trail for your ancestor in Scotland. If you reply, I'll help you out.
