It took a pandemic for me to revisit the binder with this branch of my family.  Ann Gorry (Garry) Sheridan Hynes b. 1857 to Patrick Gorry and Catherine Monahan around Carnaross.     She married John J Sheridan (1847-1894) in either Ireland or New Jersey, USA.
She returned to Ireland as a widow (around 1926) and married Peter Hynes of KingsMountain, Kilskyre on 5 Dec 1928 in the RC church in Kells.  She died in 1935 and is buried in Ballinlough (Catholic Cemetery at the church).       Annah Gorry had siblings, also born in Carnaross, Meath.  They were Patrick (b. 1864) and Catherine (b. 1866) and Mary (b. 1868) and Bridget (b. 1870).  When Annah returned to Ireland and was married in Kells, Mary Masterson was one of the witnesses.  Could that Mary be her sister?  How would I find out?
Looking for further information about her Monahan origins- and Gorry/Garry family origin.        I also wonder how they ended up in New Jersey.......seems to be a connection between Meath and New Jersey.  Are there newspapers from the 1860s which advertize NEWARK, NJ as a destination in the "New America"?
Any ideas?
THANK YOU!                Ann Marie

  • Ann Marie:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located the parents church marriage record in 1857. See transcription below. Civil registration did not begin until 1864 for RC marriages. I did not find a baptismal record for Ann but located one in 1861 for a sister Elizabeth in Carnacross RC parish. Here is a link to the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0911 You may want to scan the register from 1857 looking for Ann's baptismal record.

I looked further back on Roots Ireland for Patrick Gorry/Garry and Catherine Monaghan but there were too many records to find a good lead for their baptismal records.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you so much for these leads!    Once I was acclimated to the handwriting, I was able to find Anne's baptismal record on Nov.8, 1858 in the Carnaross records.  Parents correctly named as Patrick Gorrey and Catherine Monaghan.  Interesting, the sponsors were John Monaghan (a sibling of Catherine's perhaps?) and Anne Carolan.     While searching the 1901 and 1911 census records of the Drumbaragh townland mentioned in the December, 1928 marriage of Annah Sheridan (nee Gorrey) to Peter Hynes in Kells, I found the surname Carolan.       SO, there might have been a connection in that area for a while......and I will continue to wonder.                   Two more questions: 1. Are you aware of any connection in Meath newspapers that might have encouraged folks to move to New Jersey during the 1860s or 1870s?          2. I wonder if Mary Masterson (the witness to the 1928 wedding in Kells) could have been Mary Gorrey (sister of Annah Sheridan - nee Gorrey).    Suggestions on how to investigate those questions with Irish resources?       THANK YOU!!!                                    Ann Marie

  • Ann Marie:

Not aware of Meath newspapers encoraging folks to move to NJ. Usually there were relatives who kept bringing over family from Ireland. My connections in East Mayo all went to Philadelphia. There are many other examples of people from a certain area in Ireland moving to the same area in the States.

I think I answered the second question on another message. I could not find a Mary Gorry/Masterson marriage.

  • SHERIDANS - LEDWITHS- ROGERS     ANOTHER  COUNTY MEATH TO NEW JERSEY CONNECTION

I too have 3 branches of my family from around Kells ,County Meath. They are the Sheridans, the Ledwiths and the Rogers.I know that my  g- grandfather was Hugh Rogers from Cor Town,Bohermmen, b.1812 married Catherine Maquire b. 1819 from their tombstone in Trenton, New Jersey. They had 2 sons Mark b.1855 and Patrick b.1856.

I am also looking for Bridget Corrigan from Old Castle, Meath. ,born to Daniel Corrigan and Biddy Nulty in 1791. She married Patrick Ledwith born in Ballybrown, Clonmellon Parish March21, 1781 . They married on Nov. 23,1811 in Carncross parish.

Finally I am looking for James Sheridan born around 1818 who married Ann Ledwith(child of above) in Trenton, New Jersey.  Ann Ledwith (Sheridan), Co Meath. b. 1819 along with her sister Mary Ledwith were baptized at Kells .Ann's god-father was a Patrick Sheridan.

James Sheridan may have had a sister named Catherine as she was a god-mother to one of the Sheridan children. James Sheridan is the most elusive for me. I am leaning towards a James Sheridan  in Kilskyre, but I have no proof. I actually went to the RC church there but it was closed.I also visited the Sheridan Cheesmongers there just in case they were relatives!

All the above people ended up in Trenton, New Jersey!

PS. I think County Meath is one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland.

  • Thank you both (Kathy and Roger) for your replys!

Roger, thank you for searching the possible marriage of Mary Gorry to Mr. Masterson.  Have just discovered that sometimes the baptismal sponsors were children.....my g-grandmother was 11 as a baptismal sponsor for a younger sister!     And so the search continues!    Will keep pounding the keyboard and asking questions!  Thank you!!                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Kathy, the Sheridan connection might be that Meath train/boat to New Jersey!   I am uncovering Monahan/Monaghan cousins within the circle of the Gorry-Sheridan marriage in Newark, New Jersey.

Our John J Sheridan (and I assume the middle J was for Joseph because his first son was named John and his second son was named Joseph) was born in Ireland around 1847 (from his death certificate in New Jersey).  His parents were noted as John and Mary.  John J. died in 1894 and is buried in Cemetery of Holy Sepulchre, Newark, NJ.  Have not found WHERE or WHEN John J. married Anne Gorry (born in Carnaross, Kells, Meath 1857).

I have Sheridan on another branch of my family- and they are in NJ and they have a James Sheridan.  Somehow they are connected to Joseph Powers (1860 Ireland- 1911 Brooklyn)..........and I will ask the Florida James Sheridan who is his decendent about that branch of his family.

Hope you both are well- and happy hunting!  Appreciate your interactions!                                                                        Ann Marie Lynch   (yeah, I know, there are a boatload of Lynch names in that Meath RC baptismal book- and I do not know where my John Lynch originated- am counting on the DNA for some help!)!
