Looking for my grandmother- Bridget Ryan born to James Ryan son of Timithoy Ryan and Bridget Gallaher daughter for Hugh Galaher of Oldcastle.  My grandmother Bridget/DElia was born in Oldcast in 1874.  I have her birth cert .  Her father James was in England at the time of her birth- per the birth cert.  Actually trying to find any family left.

Her parents immigrated to the state of NY in USA about 1883.  She married a James McNally in Albany NY

  • Hi Dara, I checked Griffith's Valuation of approx. 1854 and there are none in Oldcastle or Moylagh. There are three to Loughcrew: Bridget in Knocklough, Michael in Beleek and Michael in Knocklough. The records of these three should be in St. Brigid's indexes if there is any record still existing. Back then someone from Loughcrew would probably say they were from Oldcastle as it is the closest town.

    Check the Census records for Ryan in Oldcastle, Loughcrew and Moylagh.

    Contact St. Brigid's and ask for a copy of any entries to Ryan in the index book of Baptisms (Husband and wife family book index (parents and children): 1798-1955. This would have the children of James Ryan so you can research all the children.

    When researching in Ireland remember that the age stated here can be off 5-10 years. Also remember Irish naming customs (not ironclad):

    1st Son: named after the father?s father
    2nd Son: named after the mother?s father
    3rd Son: named after the father
    4th Son: named after the father?s brother
    1st Daughter: named after the mother?s mother
    2nd Daughter: named after the father?s mother
    3rd Daughter: named after the mother
    4th Daughter: named after the mother?s sister

  • Researcher believes she found my grandmother.  Bridget Ryan born 8 May 1974 to James Ryan and Bridget Gallaher. who married in Oldcastle 19 Aug 1866.

    Bridget BC says she was born in ballinlough her siblings in Crossakeel. Had older sister CAtherine born 1871, younger sister MaryAnne born 1977 and bro James born 1880.  Mother Bridg. Gallaher 's father was Hugh Gallagher born 1814 and his mother was Anne Gibney born 1815.  James Ryan's father was Timothy but cannot locate documents in Oldcastle.  On my grandmother's BC, it notes father is in England .

     

    Is there anyway to find this family the Gallagher or Gibneys.  The Ryans might not be local?

    Appreciate any suggestions.
